I'd say a combination of strength and cardio training and good diet is optimal. It's a myth that cardio is the only way to lose bodyfat - as mentioned above, the more muscle you have the more your body must metabolize to maintain it. Also, when you work out your muscles, your body will continue to burn calories even during rest. With cardio, you're chiefly burning calories only during the exercise.
I suggest if you do pick up some strength training, toss the scale and go by bodyfat measurements instead. Another way to tell if you're making progress is by how your clothes fit. Thing is, muscle weighs more than fat, is much more dense, so people who don't see the weight loss they'd expect after starting an exercise routine can become frustrated, although they are actually losing the bad bodyfat and becoming trimmer!
Don't neglect your diet either. Exercising doesn't give you a free ticket to eat whatever you want. A good diet will go a long way toward your goals. And I don't mean Dieting, which these days means starving yourself or obtaining crazy and unrealistic eating habits. I mean altering your diet to consume healthy foods in a smart and healthy way, (smaller portions, good food choices, etc.)
Good luck!

Your body should only lose 1-2lbs a week safely. So in 6 months, there are roughly 24 weeks. 24x2 is almost 50. So you can shoot for 40-50lbs in 6 months. Now you need to count your calories. Find out how many you consume in a day and eat between 500-1000 less a day. Drink water, no pop. And you should weight train as well. Muscle cuts fat when you sleep. But yes cardio is the best way, but if you want to lose a lot of pounds, you must weight train. cardio 4-5 days, weight train 2-3. High reps and low weight too. Good luck.

Long story short, eat fewer fats and simple carbs. Although Potatoes are considered a complex carb, they kinda ride the fence on that one, so avoid them too.
Eat plenty of vegetables. A lot of people would argue that you can get a lot of carbs from vegetables, but you really need them. Eat lean meats like fish and chicken and avoid fried foods.
Stay well hydrated. Cut back on the sweetened drinks like soda, sweet iced tea, things like that. They're a little dehydrating and the sugar won't help you at all. They're bad for you in other respects too, mostly soda, but we won't address that right now.
In terms of diet, you should also cut back on how much you eat, especially if you're not excersising. You're not aneaorexic because you eat less. It's totally acceptable to limit your caloric intake.
Lastly, it is harder to lose weight and shape up if you don't excersise. Any excersise would be good, but if you are overweight, then you may run the risk of having bad knees or a less powerful cardiovascular system. Start slow, but don't cut corners if you can help it. Stretch before and after you work out.
And good luck, bud.

weight training is very efficient for losing weight (Fat), because increased muscle mass requires your body to burn more calories for days as your metabolism is raised after the workout, while cardio only works when you are running, etc. CArdio and weights are a good mix. Keep in mind that muscle weighs more than fat, so you may gain "healthy" weight, and lose the bad weight "fat">
