No early society had put any restrictions on the number of wives or put any conditions about how they were to be treated. Jesus(pbuh) was not known to have spoken against polygamy. As recent as the 17th century, polygamy was practiced and accepted by the Christian Church. The Mormons (Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints) has allowed and practiced polygamy in the United States.

Actually there are three kinds of polygamy practiced in Western societies:

* Serial polygamy, that is, marriage, divorce, marriage, divorce and so on any number of times.
* A man married to one woman but having and supporting one or more mistresses.
* An unmarried man having a number of mistresses.

Islam condones but discourages the first and forbids the other two.

"If you fear that you will not deal fairly by the orphans, marry of the women, who seem good to you,, two or three or four; but if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with them, then only one or one that your right hands possess. That will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice." (Qur’an 4:3)

"You will never be able to deal justly between wives however much you desire (to do so). But (if you have more than one wife) do not turn altogether away (from one), leaving her as in suspense…" (Qur’an 4:129)

In the words of Mrs. Annie Besant, a founder member of Theosophical Society, Madras, India in her book 'Life and Teachings of Mohammed' writes: “There is pretended monogamy in West, but it is really polygamy without responsibility; the mistress is cast off when the man is weary of her, and she sinks gradually as the `woman of street’, for the first lover has no responsibility for her future. She is hundred times worse of than the sheltered wife and mother in polygamous home. We see thousands of miserable women who crowd the streets of Western countries during the night. We must surely feel that it does not lie within the Western mouth to reproach Islam for polygamy. It is better for woman, happier for woman, more respectable for woman, to live in polygamy, united to one man only, with legitimate child in her arm, surrounded with respect than to be seduced and cast off in the street, perhaps with an illegitimate child outside the pale of Law”.

I see the points you are making here...but... How come it's always the guy that gets more wives??? What if I got "tired" of my husband? I'd be considered a harlot!

Personally, if my husband decided to get another wife, I'd be really ticked off.

You speak as if a man having multiple wives was the only option. There have been cultures, the Celts for example, where a wealthy woman could have multiple husbands. It was said of Queen Maev of Conacht that when she took one husband to bed she always had another waiting outside in case the first didn't get the job done. Polyandry is still recognized by most, if not all, of the Pagan faiths. The only religions that forbid it are those which deny women the same human rights as men.

Polygamy was required in early stages of mankind. Just like in nature, it was helpful for a capable man to proliferate his seed through multiple women, increasing offspring who were stronger and more likely to succeed. Kinda like natural selection.

Women have evolved socially over the last few centuries and have mostly rid the earth of the practice of polygamy. As a result the natural law of survival of the fittest is no longer active within the human race and the gene pool is increasing dramatically.

A side effect to this thinning of strong leadership genes is increased land usage for mobile home communities.

Well, I'm a female and have practiced serial monogamy and have had numerous sex partners, but am now living with and commited to lover for life and he the same. I believe that your religion, just like Christianity, denies the existance of female sexuality.

Wow, nice addition. You've comfirmed my beliefs that your religion, like Christianity, denies the existence of female sexuality and the female ability to take care of her own. I've never been and never will be a 'woman of the street' and it was me who grew weary or bored if you may of my past lovers. Female sexuality is not that different from male sexuality.

actually the Mormon church no longer practices polygamy, it is a different branch of people that used to be mormon but pulled away and made their own church known as "the fundamentalist church of jesus christ of latter day saints" they have a colony in canada near the washington border, and one on each side of the utah / arizona border (that i know of at least.)

the fbi apparently has been after them for years for welfare fraud, the man marries one woman legitimately, then the rest collect welfare because the law sees them as "single mothers"..

crazy stupid stuff..
