Speaking from my experience visiting Vancouver, I would have to say that Canadians, in general, are far more friendly than Americans. Maybe this is because their government (via the media) doesn't spend all its time and effort into making its population paranoid. I would gladly trade my US citizenship to become Canadian.

As a whole I think Canadians are great, being one myself, but it is so hard to generalize an entire population, even if it is small compared to the US. I believe that most Canadians are open minded, believe in multiculturalism and are polite. But like others have mentioned certain areas of the country fall into these categories more easily than others.

Well, being Canadian I have a unique perspective on this question.
Canadian's ( in general ) are known to be polite, kind and thoughtful of others. Now, in staying that this can be somewhat regionalized. For example, I am from the GTA ( Greater Toronto Area ), and it is my opinion that Canadians from the East Coast of Canada are generally more polite and thoughtful than in other areas of Canada. Canada, and Canadians are in most part a microcosim of the entire Planet as a result of our Cultural diversity.
Perhaps a definition of a Canadian can be this, to be Canadian is to be like everyone else in the world, except more polite, more kind and more caring.
We need to stop comparing us to Americans, because there is no comparison. Our cultures and upbringing are drastically different. We are unique.
Cheers.

I'm a Canadian and personally, we respect everyone for who they are. Generally we tend to know more about other cultures and are more understanding. I have friends from all over the planet. The city of Toronto has one person from every country in the world.

Unlike the way many people do with Americans, I have hard time trying to generlize millions of people into a few words.
All I can say is that I have met some very nice ones, and some colder more stuck up ones.. and the same thing holds true of really any country.

As a Canadian myself, I love our culture as diverse at it is.. It is a beautiful country with lovely landscapes. I have lived here all of my life and wouldn't want to live any where else. It is much different than the U.S, even watching the American news it is astonishing to see how different we are! We are not allowed to carry weapons for one..we have a much lower crime rate..the list is endless...

It is a matter of individual opinion. Where am at, in early 80s most people if you pass by them they'd smile and perhaps say hello. These days not very many people do that anymore as more and more people from other countries migrate. Driving habits are getting worse, hardly anyone gives way anymore. In crowded places you'll hardly hear anyone say excuse me, pardon me, or am sorry when they bump onto you or try to pass by you. IF some people doesn't hear you say excuse me or am sorry they will give you the look and murmur a hurtful word. I thought shopping should be fun but most are in rush. The impatience are growing as prejudism continue to exist.

There have been very, very few that I haven't liked, and I have met a lot. I've been to every province plus the Yukon Territory.
