How could any rational, loving person in today's world think that this sort of thing was from God?

Only if you believe in Satan. Otherwise a pretty barbaric set of rules with major evil overtones. I would not want to be party to most if not all of these rules.

The same can be said for the God of Christianity. He forbids murder, then tells his people to go out and commit genocide several different times throughout the bible. (Deut 2, 3, 7, 20, 25; Joshua 6, 8, 10; Numbers 31, 1Sam15; 2Sam 12.. just to name a few examples)
