Uncle Sugar pays about $200 a piece for them(believe it or not), on mass quantity gov. contract for our Marines and other troops, which is what the "Mattel Toy" is REALLY worth. Unless you can pass the Gestapo background check and afford the $200 Federal transfer stamp, ON TOP of the $2500-$3500 price tag, IF you can even FIND one, forget about gettin' yourself a full-auto "poodle shooter".
There are several places, most notably Bushmaster or Rock Island, you can get an AR-15 clone w/ all the new fancy bells & whistles for about $1100, if you just have to have a popgun, but why? If you're gonna spend that kind of serious coin, why not get something in a respectable caliber, like 7,62 NATO(.308 Win.) in a H-K91 (G-3) or FN/FAL?

While not disagreeing with what the military in the US pays for them...
There are a number of places that can sell suitable qualified individuals the full auto version of the black rifle. The first one that comes to mind is CMMG, they can sell you full auto AR-15s, even an M4 lookalike with all the right parts. They sell them to 'contractors' heading for Iraq. I can't price them from work, the company doesn't approve!
The US Military is currently toying with a couple of more effective rounds, Remington 6.8 SPC and 6.5 Grendel, both are available full auto.
Despite having 4 I am no fan of the AR, it's just what I can get for reasonable cash. If I was looking for a battle rifle I'd rather have a FAL or Galil.

If you as an individual can find a M16 A2 that is transferable for less than $10,000.00 then it would be a find!
The Dealer Samples sell for $4000.00 or so.
For just going out and having fun shooting the AR15/M16 5.56mm round is hard to beat. I usually carry a few with me when I go and they include, but not limited to, any one of my Ar15's, AK47's, FAL's or occasionally my M1 Garand's.

If you're referring to the Systema Training Weapon M16A2 then you're looking at around $1200
If you're looking at buying one for assault purposes then you should probably seek medical advice.
