He's 16 weeks old and often seems to move his jaws in a yawning motion. What's up with that?

often times dogs yawn as a way or releasing stress / nervous energy. he could also be sending calming signals. he's letting you know that he's chilling out, and he wants you to and hopes you will feel calm and relaxed too.

Yawning -- dogs yawn to reduce their own stress and attempt to calm others. Tip: when a dog displays a fear of some common, nonthreatening stimulus (such as the approach of another dog or someone in a hat), the family members might try looking away and yawning at the onset of the stimulus.

My dog will be playing, or doing something where his mouth opens really wide, and then it turns into a yawn. I think its similar to humans, sometimes that motion (or even seeing someone else open wide like a yawn) makes us actually yawn.

Your dog yawns because he's feeling stress from you. It's his or her way of telling you to chill out. Some of it may be from boredom also. Don't let it get to you it'll get better.
