The biggest feature if those set top boxes is pulling in digital signals. If you have one that is for over the air reception that means you get more channels. Check my first link bellow, some areas dont get much of an advantage yet.

Some of the plusses are:
A channel guide
Digital sound
Better picture (of course)
some even come with a DVR
