I don't recall any specific prohibitions on what a married couple can do together. I think the sex-is-only-for-procreation thing derives from the idea that all other sex is by definition "sodomy" and since sodomy is prohibited, therefore all other sex is. I believe that what God's objection to the lifestyle of the Sodomites (from where the word derives, had more to do with their godless, murderous, raping, evil ways than their chosen sexual positions). I think that if you look at most of the ancient taboos, many of them had a basis in health (unclean foods, keeping yourself clean, treat your diseases). Sodomy has been passed down through the ages as a taboo against sex, when really it should be a taboo against runaway sinful living.
Certain types of sexual activities especially among promiscuous people could certainly be considered to be unclean, and all people should treat their body as if it is a Temple. But between healthy married people, I think probably anything goes, so long as it is clean (you won't get sick from it), it doesn't inflict harm on your partner, both persons are enjoying the activity and that the activity strengthens your relationship. The Song of Solomon is probably the most overtly graphic section of the Bible, and clearly it suggests not limiting yourself to just vanilla sex purely for reproduction purposes only.
Sex in all its forms is a healthy part of a good committed relationship if it is done responsibly and is fun for both persons. How, when, where and why are up to you and your tastes, as well as the responsiveness of your individual body. Just remember to take care of your body and it will take care of you. I don't think that you will be punished for loving your husband or wife, for pleasing them or for making your lives together better, so long as that is the actual result.

yeah that's right... so if you go with this logic, if your mom has 3 kids for example, she and your dad had sex 3 times in their life! how boring!
This is nuts. You can't simply have sex for procreation... What if it doesn't work at first? Are you damned? lol!
But really, without joking, this is not what it means. What it means is that in order to have sex, married couples must have in mind that one day they will procreate.
Church doesn't accept sex as a pleasure / meaningless thing. For example, if a couple is married and doesn't want kid, then, sex becomes a sin.
The idea of procreation is really important for Christians, this is why they say sex is for procreation... This is also another way to be against gays and lesbians, since they can't procreate as a couple... The idea behind this is only that you need to procreate... cause if you don't, the population will extinguish...
Thing is, now, we know there are other countries and billions of people. That makes the idea a little less complicated.

Sin is an invention by irrational men. Sex is fun due to the evolutionary process. Painful sex would result in nothing having sex. Pleasurable sex would result in "intelligent" organisms having sex. How many people would be on earth if sex was bland, uneventful, and solely for purposes of procreation? If sex was as fun as mowing another person's lawn for free, I'd doubt religions would even have to say "don't have sex before marriage" since no one would want to.
Of course, some may prefer the unrealistic, supernatural explanations of mysterious ways or some other voodoo talk.

Sex was given to be enjoyed within the bonds of marriage between a man and woman. It brings us closer to our mates and helps to relieve stress and tension. While procreation is a goal it is not the goal. The problem with premarital sex is that it can taint the marriage bed, bring on the curses of STD s, illegitimate children, and inspire lusts that can lead to infidelity. God did not give us sex as a chore, it should be enjoyed within the confines of marriage, and not cheapened to the point of being a "thing", and not a loving act.

I can't believe people believe that Sex is only for procreation either. And I am a Christian. It is only for marriage.
If you consider the nerves and construction in both the male and female genitals it is obvious that God intended sex to be for pleasure as well.

Sex is not limited to procreation. Even the Apostle Paul refers to men being unable to "hold" themselves (quaint language), and urges them to marry for that reason and to avoid adultury.

That attitude sure takes the fun out of things, doesn't it?
If you are in a committed relationship, why not enjoy sex?

If sex is only for procreation does that mean that any Christian couples that have sex and use a condom or any type of birth control are going against god? And if I have that right...they are going to hell for it.

It all depends on what branch of Christianity I suppose.
Catholicism says have as much sex as you want in marriage. Just do nothing "unnatural" and welcome children if they arrive!
I'm not sure what fundamentalists believe.
