We started potty training our son around 2 1/2 because i was pregnant and almost due and there was NO WAY i would be changing 2 kids diapers!! LOL..
Well what i did was that i ask my son every couple of hours if he had to go peepee or poopoo.. He would usually say no and i would tell him that i would need him to try.... I would always have to take everything waist down off since it is harder for boys =) he didnt always go, but i would sometimes keep the faucet running cuz sometimes its helps. He was wearing pull up at the time and he figired its just easier to go in his pullups.. It was always hit or miss with him for a while, but we kept it a regular routine..
My son also isnt very talkative, but soon discover boys could "stand" when they went pee which he loved so much better..the words he uses now it "stand" (for pee of course) and "sit" (for #2)..He wasnt quite tall enough for the potty so we bought a kids stool from ikea for like $3? anyway, so one day we switched him cold turkey to underwear.. of course he had a few accidents.. then one day i took him to work with me and he had an accident in front of a few people, he was so embaressed, he never peed in his pants again! so from this day forth, he is completely potty trained and still uses the terms "sit" and "stand"...if he is in underwear and has an accident, trust me, he WILL NOT like the way if feels, which may encourage him to actually go potty..
good luck! =)

I'm not sure how different is a child that has speech delay so l can not help you on this aspect of it.
Now l have been wondering about how to potty train a 2 1/2 year old as well and l even posted a question on this. In my particular situation, we have the child only 50% of the time and she is with her other parent the other 50% of the time. And our biggest problem is that the other parent is not doing her share of it. So here's what we've tried recently. It is somewhat of a hassle but it seems to be working just fine.
We got her some big girl underwear and take her potty every half hour or so, so far she's gone each time and has had only one accident (a # 2 accident) and when she did she told me right away and finished her #2 in the actual potty. So this seems to work well and if you try that, you will get accidents but eventually they will get it. The hardest part of this is to be consistent and take the child potty every hafl hour or so and let them bring a toy or a book to keep them entertained when they go. And when they do go, be sure to praise them and let them know how much of a good job they are doing.
Any questions, you can email me.

Print out a potty chart that has spaces for: BM in pants, Pee in pants, BM in potty, Pee in potty, Dry Pants, and times at 30 minute intervals. Be consistent in taking your child to the potty every 30 minutes and mark on the chart each time you check the pants. It will give you an idea of pottying patterns and the consistency will teach your child to use the potty. After your child wipes, and flushes, have him/her wash and dry hands. Don't use food rewards like suckers, but a posterboard chart with stickers is a great motivator.

What work best for me is to just wait for the child to want to be potty trained. The 2 yr old here is almost completely trained and I never once "took" him to the potty, to allow him to just sit as so many advocate doing. He is also speech delayed but has learned to make himself heard on the matter.

my daughter also has a speech delay, which is why we had to wait a little longer than most to potty train. first we waited for her to wake up from bedtime and nap time dry...which was about 30 months, maybe sooner. then we spent three days at 34 months of putting her on a little potty in front of the tv every hour..and always said.."go potty" which is important with the speech delay because then she learned to say "potty" every time she had to go. than, which this was more for a girl, but she really despised going poo on the potty, so to get her to sit on the potty for more than five seconds, i painted her toenails..really slow. that way she had no choice but to let it out on the potty. it is harder with the delay, but if you give him enough time, it'll be much easier on you, and he won't get so frustrated. just work on the words you want to use.

There's no way really to push your child into it before they're ready. I know plenty of boys who weren't potty trained until well past their 4th birthday so by you putting a time frame pressure on yourself and your son, you'll only create more stress and frustration. Just have a potty in the bathroom and when he's ready to use it, he will, language issue or not.

Try a potty video from the library or buy one. Ask him frequently if he needs to go potty. I just potty trained mine. She was 2yrs and 10mths. I used the sticker award system. If she went to the potty then I gave her a sticker. Then I bought some underwear for her and it worked like magic. Good Luck. He will do it when he is ready, just be consistent.

We made a tremendous declaration that we have been going to begin utilising the bathroom. So we took off the Pull-Ups and placed on coaching undies, set the timer for each part hour or so, while the timer sounded, we marched to the bathroom and attempted to pee pee or poopey. If we had good fortune, we danced and whooped and made a tremendous deal of it. If we did not, we pulled up our undies, set the timer once more and went approximately our movements. If we had an coincidence, we mentioned it used to be k and we might take a look at tougher. Pull-united states of americawent again on a snooze time and we used the potty as quickly as we bought up. You most often recognize the time your youngster has a bowel motion, so begin asking him if he has to head poopey round that point. Timer and consistency labored for us. Good success. He'll capture on. It takes plenty of labor, however do not make it disagreeable.
