I always hear people that are new to TX say that we drink a lot more here than the people in other states. I'm just wondering if that's true.

It's human nature to do what we are told not to do...we act that way at 10 months, and we act that way as adults...so theoretically speaking, I'd have to say states like Tennessee and Kentucky, where they have large numbers of "dry counties" in attempts to persuade people from drinking, could possibly be the places where drinking is more frequent than other places. Then again, a majority of the adult population drinks alcohol at one time or another, so pick the state with the greatest adult population, and you'll probably have your answer.

texas? not even close.

The Report to Congress provides the amount of pure ethanol that is sold in each state, divided by the number of residents in that state who are 14-years-old and older. "Gallons of pure alcohol is calculated by multiplying total gallons of each beverage type by a conversion factor that represents the average alcohol content of each beverage type (0.045 for beer, 0.129 for wine, and 0.414 for spirits) and then summing over all three beverages."

report suggests the following per capita consumption (1993):
1. Nevada 4.85 gallons of pure ethanol per person per year.
2. New Hampshire 4.23 "
3. Alaska 3.28 "
4. Wisconsin 2.97 "
50. Utah 1.46 "

Calculating that a drink contains 0.5 ounces of pure ethanol, then New Hampshire's 4.23 gallons (at 128 ounces per gallon, times two) would produce 1,083 half ounces of pure alcohol per person per year. That works out to 20.83 drinks per week.

I have also heard it is Nevada. I have to think that tourism has something to do with this. Certainly not all alcohol consumed in Nevada is consumed by locals. New Hampshire surprises me.

Per capita I would think it is Montana but actually heard it is Alaska. Can't find the proof I read it in though.
