Good physical exercise in the AM and before attention-taking tasks is a huge help. Wall pushes, fast walks, jump rope, or anything that increases the blood flow to your body. Also, it seems silly, but rhythmic music has been shown to dramatically increase attention, retention, and recall. All of us have places or ways we learn best. I do best outdoors or near nature, so sunlight and windows help me. I study outside when the weather is good. I walk with my vocab when I have to learn terms and definitions or spelling. I make flash cards and walk around as I learn them. Chewing gum is known to increase attention and decrease stress. Headphones to decrease distractions are fun, especially when combined with strong drum/rhthym. I used to study with hard rock on my headphones to block out the rest of the dorm. My son runs and does a trampoline work out before school or study to increase his attention. Of course stimulants often help one's attention. Coffee and others are know to increase one's attention/alertness. We don't like the stimulants much, but the other tips I mentioned work pretty well.
One very simple way to increase your attention is to get enough sleep. Most of us walk around sleep-deprived and wonder why we can't focus. It is the number one cause of inattention.
Eat breakfast. Eat in general. Low-blood sugar causes your mind to be slow. \
Best of luck!

The tips you suggest are really the best...I have mild adult ADD, and taking short breaks every hour or so (sometimes more or less depending on the task), is the best I've found so far...be sure to walk away from the task if possible...as in walk around the office for a few minutes, go to the restroom, the breakroom, a brisk walk outside, anything to distract you...usually you can go back to the task refreshed....

Take one Cod Liver Oil or Omega 3 tablet/capsule a day.. and eat a good breakfast. This is said to increase concentration levels.
For an energy boost during the day.. I would recommend eating a banana rather than drinking coffee.. Coffee can give you an instant boost and a faster high but you pay for it later by having a lower low..
Hope this helps.

Try prayer and meditation, as a regular practice. I find it helps me clear my mind of stress, noise, and distractions. It's worth the chance.
If your not interested in that , here's a link that will give you some techniques for improving your concentration.
