Just tell them straight hair is much prettier and healthier looking. Perms are a mistake. Only my 76 year old mother gets perms.

I got my first perm when I was about 11 and I was forced to get it done by my mom. I got one of those poodle hairstyles and I was embarrassed for about a year. The only other time I got a perm was a little less than a year ago when I was 25.
If your child really wants a perm, I would make them use a curling iron for a while so your child can see what it is like to have a perm. Perms are expensive and there are a lot of chemicals involved that damages the hair follicles so I would educate them about that first. I think an appropriate age for a perm would be between 13-15, boy or girl.
If after all that is said and done, your child still wants a perm, you should take him or her to a professional hair salon. A perm is not something you want to mess around with at home with those home perming kits.
Make sure to go to a reputable hair stylist that can make the appropriate decisions and will be able to make the perm look professionally done. Besides, they may be able to talk your child out of getting a perm if the stylist does not think that a perm is right for your child.

You shouldnt perm hair until the child is 12 years of age! If you prompt for it any sooner a stylist will make you sign a waver so they are not responsible for results (they will explain the reason why as I just did) Childrens hair is very resistant to solution! Everyone who attends Beauty school is taught this! I had my first perm at 10 and it was an over processed, cotton candy, frizzy mess!

I got my hair permed for the first (and last) time in a salon when I was 12. I would probably let my kids do it at the same time, if they wanted to, regardless of whether they were a boy or girl.

Perms are a thing of the past. Most stylists won't even give a child under the age of 13 or 14 a perm because they take so long and the child won't sit still. If this is a child, use curlers or heated rollers. Safer and non-permanent.

I am a beautician, and have given a good friend of mines daughter, who was 7 yrs.old at the time a perm. Only because she was close by and I could see how she took care of her hair. Please do not do this at home, you could drip it in their eyes or overprocess it. Alot depends on the child's maturity, is he or she capable of taking care of their permed hair....don't brush it, please use a large toothed comb.....I would'nt give a perm to a child younger than 7. Hope this was helpful.

i haave had a perm, and the fumes are practically unbarable...deafinately wait thill your child is at least 13 or 14...and go to a beauty salon to get it done...to make sure that it is done the correct way, make sure to go to a more trusted, and well known salon, because i got mine done at a place that i just found, and had never gone before, and they forgot to perm the whole crown of my head...it was redone like 5 times, and it never turned out verry good, and didn't last more than 2 months because it was done completely wrong, but i had gotten it done before then, and it was at a more known and better place, and it lasted for almos 3 years...
so make sure to go to a really good salon...
