retired and short on cash, huh? You need a real attorney for this one. I do not think they can attach SSI, but, they can probably attach your bank account which might be the same thing.

Check with your Union hall, some have attorneys that they work with who will do free work with members. Sometimes guys will work their way through school and stay in touch with the guys at the union hall by doing a little free or cheap work now and then.

If you belong to a religious or fraternal organization, call the "leader" or secretary. Often there will be a member who does free or reduced cost work with members.

Finally, if you have still not had any luck, call the state bar and ask for a referral to someone who can do the work for free or at a reduced rate for a retired person.

In spite of being generally greedy and often fairly ignorant about anything except the law they practice most attorneys are trying to be good people and do good work.

Don't be put ff if the attorney seems stupid about things, most of the attorneys I have known would not know vice grips from channel locks, but, most of them have forgotten more about the law than you and I have ever known.

By the way, this kind of thing happens quite often. It has happened to me. Some one sues you and does not notify you properly. If you find out in the allotted time you can appeal and have the case over turned and reheard. Generally if the scam artist figures out you have a lawyer and are fighting they go away, "withdrawn with prejudice" was the term in my case. The idea is to get a judgement and then sell the judgment to some collector or "investor" for 20-30 cents on the dollar.

They can collect from your union pension, but I think they would have trouble garnishing your social security. You didn't mention any details about the law suit, but it sounds to me like you might have a case about about how or if you were sued. If it's a huge amount of money to you, you should go see an attorney. The other thing to try is contacting the original plaintiff and see if you can work out a payment plan; if that fails, try the collectors. Finally, just because you are retired doesn't mean that you can't file bankruptcy.

For now tell the collections company to send you everything they have. If they keep harassing you, contact the police to help you.

If they are right and you were sued, find a consulting lawyer. Hopefully she can lay down some options for you.

I agree with Warren, you should consult an attorney.
They can't do anything with your Social Security, but there is the possibility that they can garnish your union pension.
