That's a pretty broad question, and I can only guess you're talking about abuse, right? Well, I can't answer from a clinical standpoint, only from life's experiences.
There are many reasons for it. Environmental, social and economic background as well as peer pressure all play a role in drug abuse. And let's not forget those who start off using drugs for reasons of pushing their bodies to do more than what they normally would, as in the case of a medical student. Also, there are those who are prescribed medication and end up addicted due to improper use.

This is a complicated one. Depending on the kind of substance and degree of use, it can be anything from recreation or escape, to complete addiction.
Some are apparently not mentally stable in the first place.
If someone can come up with the definitive answer they will become a millonarie many times over!

Seriously there's too many reasons to go into and lots of people have different ideas, it's different reasons for each person.
P.S Sancha how you ever been around people who do drugs or ever bothered to get to know why they'd take them or even fell or even hard anything close to a hard life? I mean seriously get off your high horse!

My honest opinion is that they have nothing better to do with their money. They are stupid so they abuse their health, their lives, their families and make a convoluted mess universally.
It boggles my imagination that people would take hard-earned money (theirs or someone else's) and pay somebody else to sell them stuff to destroy their lives, slowly and definitely. It has to be stupidity.
I don't care how bad things get and whether or not I can meet my bills or whatever these people use as reasons for inhaling strange materials into their nostrils and injecting dangerous liquids into their veins which were meant to convery healthy blood, I will not do this evil to my precious body.
And don't tell me they were at a party and their friends were doing it so they went along. That, again, is unqualified stupidity!

ive been asking myself that for years, ive never done any myself, but i wonder what makes people do it, i can understand that people take cocaine, speed, and tablets for a high, like when they are out, i understand that people smoke weed to chill out or for pain relief, but i dont undertnad herion users, ive been told over and over again that the first hit makes you feel awful for days, sick and all sorts, so why would anyone want to take that first hit, knowing that its going to be awful, but then why would you take the others knowing you might not make through the night alive? i guess the way we live today has something to do with it, people used to have without all that years back, its got way out of hand now

You get the idea? for as long as there have been civilisations on the earth people have experimented with drugs just to see what happens from liquids to pills, fungus and powders the people just want to have fun!! And don't forget the foundations of many religions is based in drug induced experiences!

Recreation?
most people take drugs of one form or another for many different reasons.
Some to escape, some to explore, others to simply enjoy.

Honest answer: people are different, have different drives and different lifestyles. That also makes life an exciting process. Imagine how boring life would be if we were all similar in outlook, hopes, fears, loves and all!
