My family has 3 dogs, a lab, a dauchand and I have a 2 year old female chihuahua. My chihuahua isn't that great when it comes to eating her food. She'll take a bite or two and then walk away from it. My problem is the other two dogs. As soon as the chihuahua walks away they will eat her food. The only time that she will eat is when I either give her straight people food or mix people food in with hers. I've heard from some people though that wet/people food is bad for chihuahuas. Is this true? And if so, what should I do to get her to eat? Please help, thanks!!

Yes, people food is bad for them, its not a balanced diet for a dog. The problem is she has trained you into giving her what she wants. Try feeding her seperate from the other dogs, and pick up her food when shes finished. Stop giving her people food, she wont let her self starve, but she'll probably try and be stubborn about it. Just offer her a meal, let her have access to it for 1/2 hour or so, and then pick it up. She'll learn quickly that if she wants to eat, she'd better do it a meal time. Remember that she is tiny, and Chis dont eat that much when compared to lab, probably only 1/4-1/2 cup (of dry food) twice a day depending on her age and the food you feed.

You can buy pouches of good quality moist chunk food at the grocery store. I have used Pedigree and Mighty Dog my Chihuahua loves it especially the chicken and liver variety. You can give it to her and put some soft food in it too. Purina also makes the beneful moist food that looks like people food. I would say try that and it might fool her. What kind of dry food are you feeding her? Is it the same food the other 2 dogs eat? Is it small enough kibble for her to crunch up because they make dry food that are for toy breeds like Purina Little Bites and Pedigree. Also try feeding her separate from the others maybe put her in another room away from the other dogs. Maybe she would like some eat in private without intimidation.
Definitely stop feeding her people food because it can cause irritable bowels, gelled stools, and diarrhea to name a few. It adds to the problem and causes other problems.

Human food is bad for dogs.Dogs will not want their own food once they get a taste of human food.I suggest soon as the chihuahua walks away from the bowl put it up where the other dogs can't reach it.I had the same problem with my retriever once he got human food he didn't want nothing else.I put his dry food down and he ate it after a couple of days. You just give her a little time and she will eat her dry food.Don't worry she will eat it when she gets hungry.

My dog want eat if it needs to go outside. Then sometimes he gets an upset tommy so if he refuses to eat a bit of cheese I give him a teaspoon of Pepto-Bismol. Chihuahua's are a one person dog, to many others in the house could keep them upset.

Have you tried baby food like baby cereal or baby meats they will usually try that if they wont eat anything else . Or you could try boiled rice and chicken . I know I have a chi but he is nt picky . I have friends that have tried this method and been successfull at it . So try those and if that does not work I would try the vet . good luck and I hope I helped.

Take it to the doctors (for pets) and tell them the problem or call over the phone and they might be able to tell you that way to!
