Well I have a daughter and I wanted to name her Lynn, after my aunt. My Grandmother, Mom, and me all have the same middle name- Sue. So I wanted my daughter to have the same middle name. Well, Lynn Sue was a little to Chinese for me, seeing that I am as white as white can get :) So we changed it to Lynna. It is different, and we can still call her Lynn if we choose!

That's a pretty open-ended question. But I can tell you, unless you stick to one syllable like "Amy" someone will find a way to shorten any name.
