Man, if there was an easy answer to that, life and dating would be sooo much easier! Sadly, there is no tried and true way to know. Getting into a relationship with someone is always a risk. The best that you can do is try to be friends with a person first and really get to know them before you jump into a relationship. Also, try not to get too serious too quickly. Not everyone deserves your heart and it's possible you were deciding you were in love based on all the wrong things. And don't ignore telltale signs that the relationship is not going to work out just because he's cute or popular or says all the right things. I find with a lot of my friend's relationships, by the time it's over, they realize that whatever it was that finally broke them up was there all along and they had ignored it. (For example, a wandering eye, or maybe he was irresponsible, or he never made time for her, or was never really that into her in the first place.) Look at the guy's actions--with his friends, with his family, and especially with you--over anything that comes out of his mouth. Sadly, there are lots of guys out there who talk a good game but don't mean well at all. Be open to love, but not so much that it makes you blind to the obvious. And don't sabotage future relationships based on what you've experienced in the past. There are still a few good ones out there...I hope.

Love IS confusing. It always has been and it always will be. You just have to jump in with both feet and take the risk. I've had my heart broken a lot of times in my life, and I've broken a few myself. But I wouldn't go back and change anything at all. All of that is what has made life fun.
