Advocates tell you to change paper every day. I have come up with a much more simple solution, being that I have macaws, and they wrote the BOOK on messy.

What I do is take full newspaper, all together, and lay it out in the trays at the bottom of their cages. To cover Rio's cage, it takes 2 newspapers. I layer it so that there are several pages together, and every morning, when I get up and replace water and pellet for him, I just take the top layer off.

As far as his toys and all that go, I usually change out his toys every 2 weeks. The toys I take out, I wash and put in his drawer, and then they're ready to put up again 2 weeks later. When they are so badly torn up that it's pointless to wash them, I toss them and replace them with a toy from the "new toy" bin. LOL

With his perches, I take them out and clean them with dish soap once a week. They get NASTY. He's all about pooping on one of his concrete perches. It doesn't matter where in the cage I put it, he seeks it out and poops on it. LOL So that, I scrub at least once a week, and more if it gets really gross.

The floor around the cage, I vacuum once a day because he's a monster for throwing food.

To actually scrub, scrub his cage, where I take every thing out and really honestly get into every crack and crevice, I do that once a month.

A TIP: To get the poop to come off the cage easier...the places that he poops at the most, I put Pam non-stick cooking spray on it. When I go to clean it, it comes right off.

I clean mine every 3-4 days. But my cockatiel is not messy at all. If yours is messy you could have to clean it as often a once a day.

Every 2-3 days is good unless the cage gets wet or you feed wet food.

The food and water cups should be cleaned at least once a day.

it depends on how messy your cockatiels are.I suggest 3-4 times a week especially if they throw their food or shoot their pellets off the wall.A clean cage keeps your birds healthy and happy.

Once a week is fine as long as you change the paper and clean the bowls everyday.

Paper lining is changed everyday, full cage disinfection and clean-out + toy and perch rotation (at my house) weekly.
