my friend takes care of a couple of stray cats around his apartment and last night he was telling me about one of them with a seemingly torn inner eyelid. he said he was able to hold the cat down long enough to see that's what it was but now the cat is terrified of him and he doubts he'll have the chance to grab him again to take him to the vet. i haven't seen the cat myself so i have to assume he's right in his diagnosis. any ideas what it might be or what could cause it?

This can most definitely happen and would happen more often in stray cats.

Stray cats tend to get in more fights with other animals. Like raccoons and squirrels when they attack a cat is good at going for the eye balls with their back feet and claws. Even cats will fight this way at times.

They do heal somewhat on there own, but may need so antibiotic eye ointment. If its a semi-emergency you could maybe ask you local animal shelter for a live trap and try to catch him to take him to the vet.

This is surprisingly common. Chances are, it probably hurt the cat when he looked at it. A torn inner eyelid can be EXTREMELY serious. he needs to go to the doc. An infection in there will cause extreme pain and could cause permanent damage. The vet will be able to tell if its severe or if eye drops will be able to keep it clean and let it heal.

One of my cat has it. He got it from fighting with my another big cat. The vet checked on him and said it doesn't need surgery if I don't want him to. Either way, it's fine.

However, you might let the VET check him to confirm that it's nothing serious. My vet sent him to the Cat surgery department to let the Surgery vet check him again.
