Andrea, I think you should do a lot of research before you go with a gastric band simply because it is a foreign object in your body and it will have a "port" so the doctor can inject saline to tighten it up if necessary. This "port" will be under your skin. When you start researching, you will find that often the lining of your stomach will grow tissue over the band and it will have to be removed. The port is an inlet for bacteria. There is a procedure called a "mini-gastric bypass" that is suppose to be great; that has the disadvantage of keeping your gastric juices in your stomach and will cause errosion of your esophagus. Not a good thing. I'm telling you as a gastric-bypass patient who lost 110 lbs (it has been 2.5 years) with a Reuen-Y gastric bypass procedure. For me, personally, it has been one of the best decisions I ever made in my life. This is not the "easy way out" as some people think. You have to really be prepared to change your whole life and your relationship with food, and sometimes other people who don't understand. I have a friend who lost 235lbs. with the same procedure and it has changed her life entirely....for the better! I could go on and on, however, if you want to get more info on this, just write to me @ dearbobbye@yahoo.com. God love ya!

Your right. It's not an easy solution (although people think it is) It's a lot of pain. Long recovery, you can die from it, you can still over eat with the band (although its hard to and you will feel very ill) You could go through the surgery and end up getting large again, but it could also safe your life depending on your current weight. If you are over 300lbs I would say go for it if your like 260 or something like that you should try to loose it on your own. I was 210lbs and 'Im 138 now and I did it on my own.

i would suggest visiting an online support group and get opinions from other who have had the procedure.
a good friend of mine had it done 3 years ago,and yes she lost alot of weight, but also was in a lot of pain the entire time, and finally had the band removed this past summer.apparently the surgeon nicked her diaphram during the inital procedure....and she had a severe pain in her shoulder from the moment she woke up.( i know it sounds weird...but its true) she has been through hell trying to "fix" it...but it looks like the damage is permanent.
she is very involved with an online support group in the chicago area...and has many friends that had great success with not only the lap band, but also with gastric bypass.

hard decision i know....i wish you all the best. :)

i think it is less drastic then the bypass . it can be reversed.but its only a tool to help you loose weight.my daughter is in the process of having it done.i was going for it myself.but through the testing they found i had some heart problems.believe me i'd do it in a heart beat.but remember all surgery is dangerous and not to be taken lightly.it should also depend on the persons need to loose weight.have u tried all diets out there?check out dr. onopchenko@atlantic care regional medical center if in n. j.top of the line in this field.hes on the net with a tape he talk and explains the whole procedure.check it out maybe this will help you to decide what is right for you.either way you go good luck take care.be happy.chow 4 now.

If you are grossly overweight and cannot successfully reduce, you should consider the option. You do not want to die of Pickwickian syndrome amongst other things. It has the usal danger of surgery, but you might feel much better.

it is a very impotent issue, ask your doctor for statistic of suxess, about reversibility of procedure and about other ways to fit your problem, good luck

If you have been obese all your life, I would certainly do it to save your life and receive the freedom it will give to you.
