My passport will expire this summer and we are planning on traveling in November so I am trying to get a heads start on updating it. It is in my maiden name, so I have to change the name on teh passport. On the app. it says I have to send in my marriage license, which makes me nervous. Has anyone else done this? Is there a way around having to send in your ORIGINAL marriage license?

There's no way to get around sending your original marriage certificate. If you're concerned, you can go back to the marriage license bureau and buy another original marriage certificate - you can order as many as you like. When I got married, I ordered about 5 duplicates to send in to change my name on everything, including passport and social security #. I also paid the expedited fee for the passport, and including a self-addressed stamped express mail envelope so I knew that there would be no problems getting it back. I think the marriage certificates cost about $5 each and the people in the office printed them then and there!

I just recently applied for a passport and they only wanted a certified copy..perhaps you can do that? Just get a copy made, take it to notary. However, there is a National Passport Information Center..toll free number is 1-877-487-2778 or email at NPIC@state.gov

Go to your state Vital Records office to get a certified copy of your marriage license to submit.
