You can claim the higher of state sales taxes OR your state income tax, if you can itemize.

If you itemize, you can claim the higher of the total of state and local taxes that you paid, or sales tax. This was supposed to have expired at the end of 2005, but in December congress extended it and Bush signed it, so it's in effect for 2006 taxes also.

You have to itemize to claim it.

If you have reference to the sales tax which is added to purchased items, the answer is no. This deduction was dropped during the Reagan administration.

if youre referring to sales tax, then no. you can no longer deduct sales tax as an itemized deduction. this was an option for 2005.
