I have a three month old Yorkshire Terrier and we always kennel her up when we leave for work. Well, we started off lining it with a towel and she would pee on towels outside of the kennel as well thinking it was ohk. So we decided to get some puppy training mats which would work out perfectly BUT, she bunches them up in the corner of her kennel and just pees on the floor of the kennel. Which that isn't a problem but, she ends up laying in it and I have to bathe her every afternoon when I get off from work. There has to be an easier way to prevent her from being that disgusting when I get off from work and don't feel like bathing a dog every night...I don't have kids yet I shouldn't have do that, hehe.

This is just when I am at work and can't leave because it takes forty minutes to get home and only have an hour for lunch. So, I am just talking about the span of time when I am at work.

What size crate are you using. It can't be too big or puppies will use it as a toilet. A crate should only be big enough for the dog to stand up and turn around in. Regardless of that, she may not bladder control yet and can't hold it for 8 hours. I know I cant hold for 8 hours so don't be too hard on her. Hire a petsitter to come in and walk her.

If you're keeping her in a kennel for several hours, that's why she is doing that.
Also, at three months, she doesn't have complete control of herself yet. Usually not until 6 months of age can a dog have complete control of themselves. Some puppies will just play with the puppy training pads, so I have put down old towels for one of my pekingese who thinks those pads are fun to eat. Of course, now I can never lay a towel in the floor unless I want it peed on.
Anyway, I think your Yorkie needs more room if she's being left alone for several hours at a time. Perhaps you could leave her in a bathroom while you're gone with a pad, paper or old towel to pee on and her own bed to sleep in.

The only thing that will help is getting a dog sitter to come in. Your puppy should not be left home alone for more than 3 hours at a time...I'm surprised the shelter didn't tell you this when you adopted it.

Dog sitters are very inexpensive. If you allow the dog to continue being locked up all day like this, it will be VERY difficult to house-break it and it will most likely begin to develop behavioural problems.

To find a sitter, just search online. Make sure you interview potential people and ask for references from current/past clients.

I feel sorry for your dog, at 3 months old he can hold his pee for three hours and that is it. Hire a dog sitter to train him while you are at work. Once he is 9 or 10 months he may be able to wait until you get home to go. If you don't get him broke now you will be clean up pee and bathing him everyday until you get tired and put him in the pound.

Jillian, dogs don't like to lie in their own pee, but because she has restricted space she may feel she can't get away from it. Could you give her a larger area to spend her day in, the kitchen, for instance, or even a bathroom, and then place her crate with a comfy pad in the larger space, leaving the crate's door open. It should be some distance from her pee papers. She's still very young, and missing you, and finding it hard to hold on, but she wants to stay dry where she sleeps. Give her lots of toys to play with as well. Hope this helps.

yes get a new cage that has a bottom that pulls out just a tray of all her watse and when you comehome pull it out and out it in the trash, you may want to put a fresher in the tray so it wont stink up your house good luck!<3
even tho you should let the dog out or have someone check up on it and let it go out side not only to pee but to have some fresh air from being in the cage all day long!! and maybe you should of not got a dog til you had this stuff planed out.also it is not good to keep giving your dog a bath it gives them really dry skin.

Many good answers, the only thing I can add is that you are giving positive reinforcement to a negative behavior. He gets attention from you when you get home every day, so in a way you are training him to like lying in his own pee. He really needs a different situation while you are gone. And get a rawhide bone to develop his teeth. Best of luck.

the puppy needs to be supervise/train by a human when they pee, poo, even when the eat! which at three months old must be done at least 3 times a day!

yeah that's a problem, you at work all they long, leaving the puppy an attended, but unfortunate that's what the puppy needs the attention/training until it becomes an adult.

You can't expect a puppy to hold it's pee for 8-9 or more hours a day!!!!! You need to put her in a space big enough for her to get away from her waste. They do not WANT to be by it!!! If you cannot provide an adequate space for the puppy you need to find it another home.

That is hard to do, but get one of those kennels that have a pull out bottom. also try getting thos puppy pads that haveadhesive on the bottom. Puppies that small have very active bladders and I understand that it is impossible for you to get home and let her out. Did you consider a doggy door?
