I haven't had this done, though a friend once recommended it. I did a bit of research at the time and most of the websites I found were very anti-ear candling. They ranged from "it's a hoax" to "it's dangerous."
I didn't get it done, but have asked a few (other) friends who work in the medical field and they all advised against it. Many cited the possibility of getting burned, and a few mentioned cases where the hot wax had dripped into the ear canal and damaged the ear drum!
Also: be aware that the FDA does NOT approve of ear candling as a medical procedure. Any person or label (in the US) making health claims about candling is violating a US law. If you are considering having this done to clear your sinuses or remove earwax you should know that these claims are unverified.

Be careful... I wouldn't have this done!

Ear candling, also called Ear Coning, is a simple and safe way of removing excess earwax and toxins from the inside of your ears. The process is very relaxing and soothing and the Egyptians, American Hopie Indians, and European Healers used ear candling cones, also known as ear candles, as a safe and effective way to eliminate excess earwax and to sooth the inner ear.
I can't say that I have, but sure could use one...

Actually I've seen this method used in professional settings. Nothing really to it but i would let someone that's trained do it.

People that use ear plugs a lot need this done every so often.

Ear candling is quackery. Don't do it.
