Lance Armstrong is probably one of the greatest sports personnalities ever!!! It isnt just his credentials on a bike, 7 tours a past world champion etc that makes him great. Its what he has done for the sport all around the world, what he survuved, the cancer, and still perform as he did. And it has to be his commitment to raising awareness of cancer, the LAF has raised so much money and is helping people deal with cancer that not only will he be remembered for his sporting achievements but his name will live on in the LAF and in the people it helps.

Well if you compare Lance to the greats of yesteryear.... On a scale of 1 (poor) 10 (Excellent).
You would have to rate him a 6 Above Average. Iam not questioning his ability but its the fact that he doesn't ride the classic calendar like the old school did Mercx, Hinault, Coppi ect.
Lance just concentrates on what he does best the Tour De France and remember the old days didn't have 2 way radio's to alert the pelton etc......
Would Lance beat the greats ... not sure..... But i still think he his the most motivated, calculating sportsman that has lived in the 21st Century....
The Best NO ---- Unique YES.......

Extremely high for sport in general, but for cycling, definitely number 1.
Amazing ability to have won the TdF once, but 7 times is something else especially when he was given a 3% survival rate from the cancer.
I doubt anyone will get near him in the future where the TdF is concerned. But it would have been good to have seen him in the other classic races and world cup events a bit more.

He's in the top ten. The commitment needed to win one tour de france let alone 7 is immence, however since cycling does not require the same amount of skill as footy, tennis, cricket etc he can't be in the top 5.
1. Roger Federer
2. Maradonna
3. Pele
4. Shane Warne
5. Viv Richards
6. Johan Cryuff
7. Mohammed Ali
8. Tiger Woods
9. Carl Lewis
10. Lance Armstrong

The tour of France is like playing chess with you teams body's.
It takes three days of rest and good food to recover from one day on the tour. this man was a mentally and pysacaly orsam.
hard to believe he did this without the use of drugs, ?
Steve Redgraves is the only none cyclist to come close in the last 20 years

WHAT??????
Have you ever got your lardy backside on a bike and ridden for more than five minutes? These guys cycle for hours on end, sometimes topping 70mph downhill and averaging more than some cars could manage.
Lance is an exceptional athlete and should be in the top 5 easily.
Fat erse footballers are over rated big time, I wouldn't give then the time of day.

Of top sportsmen, somewhere in the top 10, of cyclists, somewhere in the top 100.
The TDF is one race (albeit over 3 weeks). He only ever trained for 1 race per year, unlike many of his opponents who trained for 20 races per year.
I agree he was damn good at what he did, but no way is he the best sportsman (or cyclist) ever...

In my opinonl ,- he is up there with all the greats , Merckx ,Anquteil,Hainault, moser - but then I'm biased being a roadie -after all the treatment he went through to come back to full fitness and dominate the tour ( the best bike race in the world) He was a class rider and knew when to hang up his wheels .
