Hi,
You can start learning it when you arrive in Indonesia. Not sure which city you will be in, but if its Jakarta or other big cities, there are alot of language courses.
Indonesian language is very easy to learn, simple grammar unline other country languages. However, I dont know where you are from tho...I hope you can pick up easily since you will be staying in Indonesia ...
this link may give you some idea of Indonesian language (bahasa Indonesia):

Wala ako naintindihan....
Apa khabar? It's not too difficult to learn Indonesian Language... I learned the language from the streets because I need to communicate with them. I am not an Indonesian or Malaysian but all I can say is that saya nak makan ikan bakar.

Indonesian is quite easy to learn. It has no tenses and the vocabulary is limited. Jakarta has few, not many, courses in which you can learn Indonesian. A have a friend who went to live in the villages for a few years, or months (I forgot), to learn Indonesian. He is a foreigner. He can now speak Indonesian fluently and understands Indonesian conversations very well.
But if you just want the basics, just go for the courses and have lots of Indonesian friends! Talking to them can improve your Indonesian.

Apa Kabar?! Indonesian is very very easy to learn to speak . . . understanding very fast talking native speakers is a little trickier. Luckily many indonesians know at least a little english and are happy to teach you . . . .my fave place in the world! ps. You have got to find and eat some "Nasi Campur" pronounced Nahzi Champoor, it means mixed rice and consists of many different dishes served with rice- soooo yummy

hai, i am an indonesian. to speak indonesian, bahasa indonesia is very very easy, coz my language doesnt have complicated grammar. in english, you have verb 1, verb2, verb ing, and verb 3., in indonesia, you just use the same verbs, for the past, present and future. what you need to do is just put the time in your sentence. for example: saya (I), ingin (want) makan (eat), ikan (fish), hari ini (today), kemaren (yesterday), besok (tomorrow). Now, if you want to say: I want to eat fish today, you just say : saya ingin makan ikan hari ini. if you want to say: i wanted to eat fish yesterday, you just say: saya ingin makan ikan kemaren. if you want to say: i will be wanting to eat fish tomorrow, you just say: saya ingin makan ikan besok.
is that clear??
many of friends here ( i am living in the philippines now) who has been to indonesia, said that they could speak indonesian for after 4 months of staying!! indonesian is very easy to be learned. sometime i wonder why indonesian couldnt become international language.... :)
