My daughter loves lotion, soap, diaper cream, anything she can get her hands on. If I put lotion on her she tries to lick it off. Is this a sign of something serious and is there anything I can do?

No hon, just keep it out of her reach while you're not putting it on her. Make sure you use non-toxic materials just in case she does get some in her mouth. My 2 year old son did the same thing for a while and I guess he just grew out of it. I worried at first, but it's okay. It's normal toddler behavior, we don't understand because we're not toddlers anymore. Don't worry!

How old is your daughter? There's something else besides PICA to consider, but I don't want to unnecessarily alarm you by putting it out on the table when it could be completely off-base.

Does your daughter interact well with others? Does she play with toys appropriately? An example of what I'm referring to would be pushing a toy car along the ground, VS situating all of the cars in a single file line in a specific location in your home.
Does she acknowledge people when they call her name? Is she terrified of new experiences?

If no to all of these, then, as a reformed lotion and cream-eater myself, I really don't think it's that big of a deal so long as she's ingested relatively very little and that it's not of something TOXIC. You are going to have to be hypervigilant and buy only products that have lids you can close with your adult strength but she cannot open with her toddler strength. The remaining products will just have to be kept up and away from her. As someone who easily qualifies as the ADHD poster-child, I know how much more difficult that can be in practice than it sounds in theory, but you CAN 're-train' yourself! =)

As far as my other questions are concerned, if any of them are a yes, please e-mail me at kellysumthin@yahoo. It's important not to overlook other possibilities, especially when the prognosis for many of them depend directly upon how early the issue is addressed.

=) I'm sure it's fine.

Its not serious problem, however, its not healthy either. Some of that stuff can be poisonous and could seriously harm your child because most of these products are made for adults and NOT for kids to eat. I mean, think about it. Read the ingredients on a bottle of lotion. Do you really want your child eating such a chemical mixture?????
This may sound mean, but I broke my kids of that habit by adding some tobasco sauce. Might have ruined a bottle of stuff, but you can bet your bottom dollar they never did it again. And they won't get into the habit of eating anything that is not food.

I know there is an actual medical condition called pica, in which people crave inedible materials, such as rocks, dirt, paint, etc. Maybe your daughter has that? Maybe try rubbing in the lotion quickly before she can lick it. And if you're truly concerned, I'd suggest putting a call into her pediatrician. Good luck!

First mom take a deep breath,, it will be ok,, You sounded just like us when I read your question,, I have a 3 year old grand baby that does the same thing and tries to eat other stuff.. She has pica.... and sensory disorder.... And she has Autism.. she has low iron, and a few other things,, just ask her doctor, they are test they can do,, a long battle.. I do hope it's just a phase, most of us has ate all that when we were little....
NOW TO THE ONES THAT ARE ON HERE, TELLING THIS MOM TO TAKE CARE OF HER CHILD..... YOU NEED TO APOLOGIZE TO HER..... IF YOU DON'T HAVE A CLUE THEN KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT........
IT IS VERY HARD KEEPING A CHILD OUT OF THIS STUFF WHEN THERE BODY CRAVES IT..

First of all STOP TELLING PEOPLE THEIR KIDS HAVE PICA !! You are NOT DOCTORS That is from a serious disorder from having
BRAIN DAMAGE and you IDIOTS are telling these mothers that because their kids are licking lotion that they have PICA you don't know what you are talking about!! And to tell people that their child has PICA is really DANGEROUS AND THOUGHTLESS you don't have a medical degree so stop telling people that their children have a disease from BRAIN DAMAGE!! Most likely it is a vitamin deficiency
WHAT YOU SHOULD TELL THEM TO DO IS TAKE THE CHILDREN TO THE DOCTOR AND ASK THEM WHAT TO DO THAT IS WHY THEY ARE THE DOCTOR AND YOU ALL ARE NOT !!

Hide all lotions, soap, diaper cream. Baby proof your home. You can do something about this and it is a wonder if your kid hasn't gotten so sick yet.

Yes - you should worry. It's not for consumption. Keep the lotion and other items up out of her reach and don't put lotion on her for awhile.
