Tomatoes are best stored at a temperature of 50F. Since most homes are much warmer than that you should only buy the amount of tomatoes that can be used quickly as counter storage won't keep them for long if they are already ripe.
Tomatoes should never be refrigerated. When kept at refrigerator temperatures they lose an essential flavor component called (Z)-3-dexenal.
Check Shirley Corriher's Cookwise to verify this information.
I also have a nursery catalog full of tomato varieties, and the catalog folks are stressing the same thing - no refrigeration for the fruit of their plants.

Always store tomatoes at room temperature. Store slightly under-ripe tomatoes in a brown paper bag to ripen and improve flavor. Refrigeration destroys a tomato's taste and texture.

Good luck! _;-)

If they're ripe already, keep them in the crisper and they will last longer than if they were kept in room temperature. If they're still green, it's ok to keep them out until they ripen.

Another way to store ripe tomatoes is by stewing them then freezing them. This is a great way of saving excess tomatoes from rotting. Now you'll always have tomatoes in case you feel like making a tomato based sauce.

Do not chill or refridgerate. Also when picking the right tomato it should not have a smell of a tomato. You shouldn't get the strong aroma of tomato. The tomato is too ripe when it has a tomato aroma.

Ha! Everyone says the fridge but that's not true! They should ripen on your counter. Putting them in the refrigerator will change the consistance and flavor over time. Ripen them at room temp and if you can't eat them in time, you're buying too many!

Cheers!
