Because he's tired! Seriously, are you sure he is yawning or is he having trouble with his crop? Has he been throwing up? Is he stretching his head out and shaking his neck and head? If he is just sitting there and yawning occasionally don't worry about it. If he seems distressed consult a vet immediately. Birds hide illnesses and sometimes it's too late by the time we notice something is wrong.

Maybe he's sleepy?

My Cockatiel yawns a lot after he's done cleaning and preening his feathers just before he takes a nap. We joke that he has fluff in his throat. Also, if I coo at him while he yawns, he will keep doing it to be cute. (It's funny)

If his yawning is something that truly concerns you then I would highly recommend calling up the vet just to inquire if this is normal behavior for a 16yr old Grey who typically does not yawn so often.

The Vet would be the best person to talk to.

Repeated Yawning:
Often after preening, a parrot may yawn over and over again. It could be that he's readjusting his crop or that he's gotten a bit of down stuck in his throat. Either way, it's normal. They also yawn when they are tired or after waking up from a nap.

Almost all animals have to yawn for oxygen replenishing. It's natural.
