my kitten, sometimes will have these moments, were he acts like he is going to barf, but nothing comes out. He does not do it all the time, but what is wrong with him? We have not taken him to the vet, and we got him from a garage.

It could just be hairballs or something more serious. You should definitely take him to the vet for a full exam ASAP just to make sure he's ok. Especially since it's a kitten the problem could quickly become more serious.

Kitty may have a hairball, if kitty is long haired that makes it even more likely. Many cats barf up hairballs, which are caused by accumulated hair swallowed when grooming.

Many cats pass that in there feces, but just as many vomit them. You can purchase food that will help your cat pass hairballs, also there are food supplements that will help.

Kitty may not be able to tolerate the food she is getting now if it has been changed.

Lastly I have seen cats do this when they have a worm infestation. If kitty has not been wormed you need to do this. The vet can do this or you can go to your local pet store and buy meds. At the pet store you won't be able to get worm meds for tapeworm, but round worms are the most common.

Intestinal parasites can cause vomiting and gagging. Chances are very high the kitten has (minimally) round worms, but a fresh stool sample should be brought to the vet to check for any other parasites or flukes.

The kitten may have something lodged in the throat or even a string wrapped around the teeth...could be anything. Take the kitten to the vet, he needs to be started on vaccines anyway.

I am not sure if she has teeth yet. If not, then just keep nudging the bottle at her mouth gently. Can you call and ask the friend how they were able to get her to nurse>? Perhaps they can let you know what worked for them. If she has teeth starting, she may be ready for kitten food with tepid/warm water in it. Mix it into a mush and let her sip/lap at the water and food and she will wean. Four weeks is old enough to wean. It is great that these people and you are taking such good care of the little kitten. Hope all goes well.

It could be a number of things.
He could have a hairball.
He could have worms, they were also show up in the litter box.
He could always have an upper respiratory infection or even something called Rhinotracitits...that's feline herpes.
Feline herpes will make them cough like they are trying to get up a hairball, you may also notice sneezing, runny nose and eyes and also the whites of the eyes will become red or pink...like pink eye in a human.

Please make an appointment with a Vet ASAP so you can have things checked out.
He'll need to be tested for all of the feline illnesses plus have his shots and be scheduled to be neutered.

Good luck with your new kitten

Take him to the vet, not only because of the 'hacking', but because he'll need shots, and a check up. The first thing I do when I get a new pet - regardless where I get them from, is take them to the vet for a checkup. Even if they are too young for shots. There are some tests that the vets can do to determine how healthy they are. I have other pets, so if I bring a new animal into my house, I don't want them sick, or getting my other pets sick.

Check the inside lining of your kittens mouth in case something is stuck there, It could also be a hair ball or, believe it or nor, wind. Coming from a garage it could have picked up a Small shard of metal or something in its food which is giving it the same reaction we would have to a fish bone stuck In the mouth. If you cannot see or feel anything, and behavior continues, then seek advice from your local vet.

Could be hairballs or a blockage in his intestine. If you go awhile without feeding him, he may pig out and then the dry food expands in his stomach and it is too much, so it comes up.How old is he? If very young he should be on mother's milk or formula milk for kittens from the store and then kitten chow. You could try moist food for kittens if you think it is from dry food.

First, you need to get it to a vet! It needs a general check-up and shots. It could be that it has eaten something that is lodged in it's throat, it could be a hairball, lots of different things. The vet could tell you better, after a check-up.
