Isa 45:7
I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these [things].

Mainworry: Your translation is "God brings about calamity because of sin."

So god causes pain and death to innocents because there are people who do things he does not like (even though he knew they would do it and created them anyway).

Means the same thing to me, man. Evil.

People are resorting to giving odd defintions for "evil" in order to resolve this. Merriam-Webster defines it as "morally reprehensible". Allowing a flood to kill babies because you don't like what people on the other side of the world do is morally reprehensible and thus evil. It is NOT ok just because god does it.

Hi Meat, what happened to Steve???

This particular passage is difficult simply because of the differences in how a word is meant. This is what Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Bible says:

"Isa_45:7: I form the light, which is grateful and pleasing, and I create darkness, which is grievous and unpleasing. I make peace (put here for all good) and I create evil, not the evil of sin (God is not the author of that), but the evil of punishment. I the Lord order, and direct, and do all these things."

Now the evil of PUNISHMENT is no more, done away with by the sacrifice of Jesus. So we know now that the word "evil" can have more than one connotation. One would think the Bible was written in English if we did not know better (regarding words meaning different things).

My personal view re your question is, if God is responsible for all creation (no matter what theory we use) then he had to be responsible for the possibility of evil (in any form). I don't think we can have it both ways. I think its humankind that chooses evil over good, but the possibility or choice has to be there. SW

Meatguy: Don't criticize the answers because they do not agree with your position. There ARE many definitions of evil. And do not tell us God made the tsunami and killed thousands of babies unless you personally did something to remedy the outcome. It is Christians and other believers that sent food, money, and physical help to these people because we do believe in good.

You expect us to be able to give absolute answers from a book, even a good book, written 2K years ago in different languages and we do the best we can with the information we have. If you do not want answers, do not ask the question. **JENN

PS reading the answers it looks to me like those (Christians) who gave you an answer agree, God did not make evil.

God’s enemies will use scripture as Satan did to tempt Christ.
They will misquote, twist or askew the truth for their agenda.
For example, Isaiah 45:7 to say God created evil.

Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.

A deeper study will always manifest truth.

(create) “bara” in the Hebrew.
The Hebrew Poel Participle of the verb “bara” which, with “evil”, requires the rendering “bring about”.

(evil) “ra, raah” in the Hebrew, is never rendered “sin”.
God brings calamity about as the inevitable consequence of sin.
It is rendered “calamity”.

God brings about calamity because of sin.

Whenever there are so-called contradictions of God’s Word, a deeper study is always required.
This requires time and effort of the individual to delve into the truth of God’s Word.
Also, use your brain and think about it.
God cannot create true love.
True love will only manifest in a being of freewill.
In like manner God cannot create evil or righteousness, but will only manifest in beings of freewill.

SEE HOW THIS ONE IS TRYING TO DECEIVE

OH I SEE, THE TRUTH HURTS
YOUR PERSONAL OPINION MEANS NOTHING EXCEPT LIES

We could agree on this if everyone also believed in objective good and evil. I think most people recognize the necessary subjectivity of these concepts.

Also, consider the fact that concept of an event or action being good cannot exist without the concept of an event or action being evil. Therefore, if God wanted one, he would have to create both, since neither exists independent of the other.

Generally, I try to avoid "good" and "evil" as descriptors, as they are vague, overused, and loaded terms (especially "evil"). There are usually much more accurate words to describe what we're talking about.

For instance, we may refer to an earthquake that kills thousands of people as evil, but that implies intent on the part of the earthquake, which it does not have. It is merely quite strong. The earthquake didn't build the buildings that collapsed and crushed people, nor enticed them to live near its epicenter.

On the other hand, we may call a man who kidnaps, tortures, and kills children as evil, and though most people would agree with the description, by itself it doesn't tell us much about him. Sadistic, malicious, and homicidal all seem to me to be much more descriptive and accurate. "Evil" just doesn't have a lot of kick to it.

He allowed evil by giving the option of Free Will. With out it we can not choose to love or reject God .Without it we would be just robots going through the motions. He allowed Lucifer the option and he chose wrongly.Adam also chose wrongly but God allowed a "Covering" for his sins, which was paid in full thousands of years later on the Cross.

Good & Evil are only the two Polarities of human mind.

GOD is a creation of Good People, while the DEVIL is the creation of Evil forces

Except man no other species believes in Good or Evil, therefore they do not have the concept of God & Evil also.

No, because evil is not a substance that is created. It is merely a judgement call or an opinion. If God existed (which he doesn't), at best he could have his opinion about what is good and bad. His opinion might carry more weight if he's a god, but still doesn't make good and evil characteristics inherent to anything. They're still judgements.

He doesn't exist, so whats the point in the question? No, mankind created evil, just as mankind creates good. Both of those are human concepts dictated and directed by society at large, not divine ones.

Hi Meat!

Oh, I'm not sure I can handle this new form of questioning, it actualy allows for some intellegent discussion of the conept. There is even a weak attempt at collaborative agreement. Either your synapses have been able to process my prior input in such a manner that the output appears more rational or maybe there is a little bit more behind the facade of Meat.

Hey I'm with you, though, to acknowlege anything more than mere electrical impulse would open up a whole new realm of problems for you to deal with.

Anyway, this is a good question! I particularly love it when non-believers resort to the writings of Isiah to make their point. Isaiah is one of the most widely mistranslated and hence dificult to understand books of Christian scripture regardless of faith.

For the sake of discussion though, lets take it literally. God speaking to his children, man. He is creating a point of reference that we can comprehend (ie: I am the creator, your Father and as such I have in one way or another created all things as you experience them.). Is that difficult to comprehend? Not to me.

Upon this earth God created all. By virtue of our purpose on the earth, which is to receive a physical body, and to prove ourselves herewiith that we will progress, learn and come to an understanding that, to recieve a fullness of Joy, we need to willingly follow in the footsteps of our father who is all knowing, it was necessary that we learn good from evil.

For as you know meat, without differing stimuli there can not be any change.

So yes, from a man's point of reference, based on the understanding we have, God unleashed or "created" evil on this earth and out of love for us and wisdom for our ability to grow gave us agency that we may choose, and the light of Christ that we may know good from evil. That is consitant with eternal plan.

Meat, this is a whole new level for you. I hope your circuits can handle it.

We love ya!
