i worked fulltime for one company in the last year where I received payment via checks but was not considered an employee of the company, enjoyed no benefits and wasn't even listed with the company's payroll.Under what status do I file my taxes? Employee/Free Lancer? Are free lancers considered self employed?

You should receive a 1099 Misc for this income from which you will file a Schedule C as self employed. You "filing status" is determined by your marital status and dependents but that does not seem to be your real question.

If they did not withhold any taxes from your pay then you are considered a free lancer, or self-employed (which are the same). You will report your income on a Schedule C filed with your 1040.

This actually seems like income earned as a contractor, and contractors are technically considered self employed.

As mentioned before, you should receive a 1099 instead of a W-2, and it should be reported on Schedule C.

if you received checks and no taxes were withheld , you were considered a freelance/contractor. you are responsible for paying the payroll taxes on this income. you'd file a schedule C on your 1040 to report this income. you may also deduct any out-of-pocket expenses you incurred relating to this job.

Your filing STATUS doesn't change depending on where your income came from - it's still single, married filing joint, head of household, etc.

As to how you treat the income, the other responders have answered that.
