my little 6mo. old puppy has strange urinateing habbits. we will take her out approx. about an hour from when we last took her out(or when we think she needs to go). and sometimes she wont go,but when she gets back in the house, sometimes she goes after a just a little while of being brought back inside. my little dog seemed to be potty trained. but after she got sick last month, its almost like she forgot about going outside, could this be a urinary tract infection, or just bad 'potty training' on our part?

This is a normal problems that all owners go through at least once. I would not say it is bad potty training on your part. It sounds to me like you are doing everything as you should. Sometimes dogs (pups and adult dogs) seem to have a little set back. Almost as if they forget that they are suppose to do this outside. Do you play with her when you take her out? If so try to hold off the play until she has done her business. After she has done what she needs to do then play with her and let her know that she is a "GOOD GIRL!". (play only has to be a few mins. just to let her know you are happy with her) When you notice her starting to go in the house (you need to catch her ~ getting after her after the fact will confuse her) say NO! in a firm tone but not harsh (don't "scary her", but enough to let her know you do not want her to do that), pick her up and take her outside. (then do the normal outside routine ~ do you business and then play).

Dogs with a UTI will go more often than normal and may not be able to control their bladder ("wetting themselves"). Does she go but acts like she didn't know she had to? Your vet can do a test on the urine to determined if she has a UTI.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Puppies need constant training when young and you must expect set-backs as a normal part of training. Accidents happen.

When you bring the dog outside for the first morning potty trip, hook her up to a leash and follow her with a clean container. When she squats, place the container under her and collect as much of the urine as you can. Secure it in a clean container and bring it to the vet for a urinalysis and the vet can let you know if she has a UTI. It is not uncommon for puppies to get UTI, so best to have it checked.

Also, it's that special time in her life that she is old enough to be spayed. For a healthy, happy pup, please schedule that appointment if it hasn't already been done. =)

Good luck.

I just called my vet about this this morning and she said that if she's going just a little bit, and if she has a little bit of blood in her urine that could be a UTI. She said to get a sample of the first pee of the day. Some dogs won't let you do this, so you could also take her in the morning before she has to go and the vets office will get a sample for you. She said they only needed a tablespoon of it. I would call your vet and ask them. Also it woud be a good idea just to get her neutered.

To be honest, a vet is the only one who can tell you if she has a urinary tract infection, by running some tests.

A vet check will do the trick. I wouldn't rely on any home remedies or homeopathic remedies, you could unintentionally hurt the little gal.

Well, take her to the vet. They can do a pretty quick check to see if your dog has a uti.

Urine culture by a Vet. And what was she "sick" from? That could be a source...
