Have you used tea tree oil? Apply it to the scalp and then put a shower cap over the head. Wash well with tea tree oil shampoo after leaving the actual oil on for about 20 minutes. Also take all of the clothes and bedding out of the room and wash them all in super hot water with a little tea tree oil added to the wash water. You will also need to wash the pillow and "wash" the mattress. Be sure to throw all of her brushes out and buy new ones. If she has any other hair items like barrettes etc be sure to soak those in tea tree oil water.

We had a lice issue and only 2 of 7 family members ever had it....lice seem to prefer some over others. My daughter was very difficult to treat and she kept getting new cases. Saw you used vegetable oil...Olive Oil was the only thing that worked for us. Also, you have to be extremely diligent about "knit picking". We checked diligently every day for a few weeks and we would also find more. If even one of those little buggers hatch, they are off and running. Also, you can gauge the life span of the louse depending on how far down the hair shaft you go. If the knits are close to the scalp, you have a new problem, if they are at the end of the hair shafts, you are dealing with an older knit that hatched the egg and that knit has probably been dead for some time.

There is a new lotion that contains no harsh chemicals called NUVO or another called HEDRIN. These work on the idea of suffocating the head lice. You will still need to wet comb and repeat treatment after seven days. Alternatively you could try coconut oil - leave on for 2 hours and wash off with 2-3 washes, repeating after 7 days, with wet combing. This works by suffocating the lice also and is an alternaitve to expensive over-the-counter lotions. Also, there is some fatty acides in the coconut oil that are anti-lice in themselves. Plus coconut oil beautifully conditions the hair. Inbetween treatments - wash with a conconut-oil based shampoo. I would add a few drops of tea tree oil for repellancy (in case she goes near someone infected). Neem oil is very good if you can get your hands on it to curb mating of any adult lice present. You need to check eveyones hair regularly too, to be sure your daughter is not getting re-infected after treatment as this can sometimes explain what appears to be persistence.
Good luck. Hope this helps.

Our school is aparently having a problem with it also and the local newspaper had a story about it. The local health dept. gave a recipe that they say is almost 100% effective and is not as toxic as the over the counter shampoos. They say to combine one part mineral oil and one part vinegar. Gently massage into hair and cover with a shower cap. Leave on for one hour. Then wash with regular shampoo. I don't know how good this works because I have not had to worry with head lice yet. But I have heard of people who did try this method and they said it worked better than anything else they had tried. Good luck I hope this helps.

I totally sympathise with you. I too struggled with one of my daughter's head lice problem and it's reoccurance. So I did some research this is what I deteremined.
1. Head lice are insects. Plain and simple.
2. Head lice can ONLY live on human hair folicles and will die if more than 2 days away from their 'host'.
3. They mature from egg to repoductive adults in about 10 days.
4. Eggs (Nits) hatch with in 8 days.
So.. why obviously not recommended by health professionals... we used Deep Woods Off to solve the problem. FIRST spray some Deep Woods Off (DWO) on your child to make sure there is no reaction. If they are OK with it... here's the treatment that works!
Items needed: Shower cap (no holes), Deep Woods Off, good shampoo.
Process:
1. Saturate childs hair with DWO. I mean get to get a good nice soaking to the point where most of the hair feels 'sticky' with it. Make sure you lift the hair and spray it deep and onto the scap.
2. Use the shower cap to FULLY cover and contain all the childs hair.
(You have now created a fumugation tent on your kids head!)
3. Leave this cap in place and sealed as best as possible for 30 minutes. There will be some itching but it should not be painful.
4. After 30 minutes.. a good strong washing with regular shampoo and the blow dry the hair with a HOT hair dryer.
(This removes the bugs killed and the HOT air will kill even more.)
5. WASH everything in the childs room that his/her hair could touch. That includes the bedding, hats, clothing, brushes, comes. Use HOT water and dry using HIGH heat in a dryer. (This will kill all the bugs and eggs that are off the child.)
At this point you child should have not live lice and everything is cleaned. However, there are eggs that are going to hatch. Since there will eggs left... some will hatch the next day... some the day after for a period of about 9 days and then all Eggs will have hatched. So.. 10 days after the first treatment. Repeat the exact same treatment. The lice from eggs that hatched first will not have reached egg laying maturity yet so their should not be any unhatched eggs left. However, I did repeat it once more 'just in case' 10 days after the second treatment.
Make sure you wash EVERYTHING after each treatment. For items that you can't wash (teddy bears, etc), put them in a larger garbage bag and leave them for a period of 10 days to insure any bugs will die and any eggs will hatch and then die.
I know this sounds a bit odd but it worked for us!
Good luck and I hope this helps!

This is messy but it works...vaseline thick over the hair and through it. Shower cap over it. comb it with the lice comb...wash it good andd do it again for 3 days. Your hair will feel yucky but you are smothing the lice...do this a gain 14 days later. Wash all beddings, jackets ans sweaters into a hot wash. Stuffed toys in a bag for a few days. Mattresses if possible out in the sun. Sun kills lice. A preventative measure is ....hair wax and hair jelly will help keep them from spring ing in yor hair. Keep also your jacket and hats in a plastic bag at school if jackets are hung together.

Are you spraying the mattress to kill the lice that are in it? There is a spray made by RID that you use on the mattress to kill the lice and nits that have probably infested it. Do another treatment on her hair, go through it with the comb, treat her mattress, throw out her hairbrush and any hair ties she might have worn. Everything has to be done at the same time or you will keep reinfesting her.

Perming her hair did nothing, the lice probably actually like her curls! LOL... If you have used the prescription lice treatment, and sprayed (with lice spray) your car, mattresses, sofa, carpet, curtains and thrown away all of her stuffed animals I really don't know..... are you sure no one else in the family has it??????? Whqt about the best friend or the kid beside her on the bus, buy new pillows.... you need to wash sheets, all clothing, hats, etc in really hot water and dry them completely in the dryer.

Clean the car. Vacuum it, shampoo it.
Wash ALL of your daughter's stuffed animals, bedding, and pillows. I believe you should be able to find specialized anti-louse detergent at a good drugstore.
Wash it again.
Get that nit comb and really go crazy. Make sure you find every single one.
Clean the chairs in your house. Check them for lice and nits.
