You will have to go into your BIOS. When you first power on your computer you will see a screen that has either "Hit F2 to Enter Setup" or Hit Delete to Enter Setup.
Do it and get into the BIOS, go to the Port Settings Section, find the Parallel Port or LPT1 and set it to ECP.
Exit and Save the changes and reboot your computer. Windows will pick up the new port, and then install the drivers and your software.

I would advise that you ignore Ivan R as he obviously doesn't know what he's talking about.
The response by Warcriminal is more like the real answer.
In a way, it's sad that most people on here thinks that everyone is able to afford the latest of everything.
You can, indeed, connect a scanner to the LPT1 (printer) port. I used to do this with my Acer 310P. On the back of this scanner there's a through-port to connect a printer to it.
I've just had a look on the Genius (UK) site and done a search for your particular scanner. Unfortunately, it's not listed there. All they seem to have is updated/modern scanners that use the USB port.

Hello,
(ANS) That's a little unusual because the vast majority of scanners now use the USB port. OK!! I've just being checking in windows XP I strongly doubte you will be able to use your scanner with LTP1 this is meant for printers only
However you should be able to configure your scanner to connect & work with either "com1 or com2 ports (communications ports, your system should have x2 of them).
**You may need to actually configure the com port to work with your scanner, that means it has to be set to the correct baud rate or data transfer rate. This was or has been traditionally set in Kbps (kilobytes per second), this is just like the old fashioned modems (before high speed broadband).
**How too do this, in windows, go to (open) control panel, within control panel you should see, system, open the system applet, see the various tabs, see hardware, open hardware tab, select device manager, within device manager scroll down the list until you see (PORTS) i.e. com & LPT ports, highlight com port1, right click & select properties, within properties you set up the correct speed for your scanner. That should work if you set the correct scanner port speeds, look in your scanner documentation for the correct speed in kbps to set the com port too.
**No! wont work with the LPT1 port as far as I can see!! but should work OK with either com ports though.
Hope that helps!!
