The Forbidden City was used to be the residence of the royal family, i.e. the Emperors' and his family. It was first build in the Yuan Dynasty. And it has been renovated and used by the Emperors from Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. It's like the Buckingham Palace for the British Queen.

Well, the reason it is called the Forbidden City is because one, it is big, like a mini city such as Vatican City, and back when the Emperors were in power, ordinary people can't get in there, only the ministers and relatives of the emperors are allowed with Emperor's permission. Therefore, it is called the Forbidden City.

The Forbidden City is the palace where the emperor of China lived. It is a huge complex, housing not only the emperor, but important officials, the emperor's wives and concubines, and a vast number of servants. It is called "forbidden" because ordinary people were not allowed to enter it or come near the emperor.

The design of the Forbidden city is highly symbolic, reflecting the principle of balance (Feng Shui) and the places of different social classes.

If you are planning to visit it, I recommend buying a detailed map at the entrance. You might appreciate having a tour guide, but I have found that they usually give too much uninteresting information. Instead, I would look it up ahead of time in an encyclopedia or at your local library and read a quick summary. Try to find a National Geographic article--they are very informative and interesting. The Disney cartoon "Mulan" includes glimpses of the Forbidden City. Another movie, "The Last Emperor" was filmed in it, but I don't recommend it. It's depressing.

Also, avoid visiting during the first week of October or the first week of March. These are national holidays, and it is extremely crowded.

Offering full information on the Forbidden City in Beijing where 24 Chinese emperors ruled China for 500 years.

Also known as the Imperial Palace Museum or Gugong, the Forbidden City was the place where the emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties carried out their administration and lived. Now it is open to the public as a palace museum where people can see the great traditional palace architecture, enjoy the treasures kept in the palace, and learn of the legends and anecdotes about the imperial family and the court.

Like the movie Shanghai noon where it shows the clips of the scence about the palace and the people who lives there.

It's actually more like the artist Prince - The City formerly known as the Forbidden city. It is just a bunch of temples & palaces near Tianenmen square, Beijing that the dynastic rulers lived during the Middle Ages.

It should be called the Tourist's City nowadays.
