We have done this twice and it has not been smooth either time because of Rocksann, our first. Rocksy is such a diva.
We have no idea how old Rocks is as she just wandered up 1 evening and stayed (with the encourgement of tuna and a warm dry place to sleep. She became spoiled rotten.
Then came Chi and the 2 did not get along at all. Chi persisted and in time Rocksy has come to accept her and now they even play together, a little.
Recently I found G.G. (gentle girl, good girl, glutton girl, etc.) out by the road . She and Chi have become great playmates, tearing around the house. But Rocksy hissed and went out of her way to swat at G.G. This has mellowed an AWFUL lot. Now Rocksy tolerates G.G.
The only problem we had was Rocksy decided to pea on the floor for quite awhile after we brought home the 2nd cat.
Just do everthing in your power to let the 1st cat know that nothing has really changed.
When I come home I still go to our first, first.
Don't let the little 1 have the 1st spots.
It can be trying but 2 cats are twice the fun and love.
feel free to e-mail me

Ok, first you have to know it is a process, if you have an extra room it would even be better that way you put the new addition there and keep them separate. This way the older cat can smell the new one without it being threatened. After a day or two they will be used to each others smell and you can introduce them. If they are both young it would even be easier, older cats have more problems adapting to new cats.

Keep the kitty you are getting, in a room (with all necessaties- food, litter, water) for about 2-4 days. When he is used to room, hold the kitty, up to the other kitty (Don`t push them together,) this process will take over a matter of dayz. gradually, introduce them, then about the 7th day, set the other kitty down, and see how they act
ps- ALWAYS have 1-2 people with kats.

just know that your old cat will be angry but will get used to it eventually-either by ignoring the new cat or by being buddys.I have 3 cats and got them all separately..they usually took about 3 weeks to like the new guy,and started out wanting to eat it-just introduce them gradually and dont push. I usually put the new one in a carrier and let the old guys check him out-knowing its no danger to them and protecting the kitten. Also if your old cat is peeved about it-play with him lots-cats sometimes will be in a better mood and accept things bettter

I have had to "babysit" my best friend's cat while she was allergy tested...not allergic to him... and I had a baby gate borrowed from my parents...set Tygger up in my bedroom. I have 2 cats. When the cats were ready, they jumped the gate to meet and greet...though it was growly greeting for about 5 days! It just takes time. While all that went down, though, Tygger had a safe place to run and hide to.

New animal additions to a household should be introduced to eachother initially on NEUTRAL ground, not in the home setting.

They will deal with it in their own kitty time.

i tried this and the smaller cat (a kitten) scared the hell out of 4 month old cat.. hahaha.. it was so funny!. but my beloved cat was so scared so i ended up giving the kitten away.. but maybe they would end up fine after a while.. they would get used to each others scents and presence..

An only cat is a lonely cat.
They may fight every now and then, but they will be fine after a while.

It's worth taking the time to do the introduction slowly, so they'll get along well and not be stressed. Please read this article for how to properly introduce cats: http://www.littlebigcat.com/index.php?action=library&act=show&item=cattocatintroductions
