Dogs evolved from Wolves, if you are looking for even farther back on the evolutionary chain you have to ask what was the evolution of the wolf was. In any case, the dog came from the wolf. Most research states that early people would notice lone wolves hanging out at there fires when they ate. These wolves learned where there were humans there was food. They would pick up scrapes left to them and follow the people around. The people realized this and soon saw that with wolves around the perimeter of the camps they were safer from certian predators including other wolves. So they encouraged the behavoir. Even feeding them more nad more. They started noticing the most tame ones. If these ones bred, they began to take the pups and domesticate them. They would use them as gaurds and sentries, also for work and food. They began to breed traits into the animals that they needed. This in turn changed the Size, the Shape, The Color, The bone structure. Eventually and quickly many breeds of diffrent dogs were created, just by human manipulation. I hope that helps otherwise read this great article by National Geograpic! its really intresting.

ADDITIONAL INFO: Remember you asked for the evolution of the dog, the dog evolved from the Wolf, the Wolf evolved from the Micads, a gopher like carnivore, Miacids evolved from Creatous insectavore. Direct decendents of Miacids are todays Genets of Africa. Wolves are a sub-species of Miacids. Those are earliest know wolve ancestors. The first actual recorded fossil of an actual canid wolf is is Cynodictis or otherwise dubbed the Dawn Wolf. They are said to look more Fox-like and were able to climb trees, most of there prey was small animals. Hesperocyoninae is a sub species of Cynodictis Canid. It was once effortlessly evolution. There had been no documented occurrences of speciation, so regardless of the entire other evidence the Cretinists would without difficulty hand wave away evolution as a complete. Then there used to be extra proof for matters certainly evolving and forming new species. So the Cretinists had to produce a change between what had absolutely and doubtless been demonstrated to occur (micro evolution) and what they'd still ignore and dismiss (macro evolution) certainly there could also be conveniently evolution. Small transformations occur normally, ultimately they construct up to produce a brand new species. Over longer intervals of time they produce new courses, and many others. To claim micro evolution occurs but macro evolution can't is like asserting you could stroll a mile to the shops in an hour, nevertheless there is not any method at all you could stroll the 200 miles to the mountains in a year. As soon as a Cretinist admits that a genome can alternate in micro evolution to be in a position to claim that macro evolution are not able to arise they might have got to exhibit a mechanism that will limit any further alterations in the genome. Of path they are not able to do this.

I actually watched a documentary about the history of dogs and they evolved from the wolves. When cave men went hunting they realized that they couldn't out run their prey. They observed how Wolves would run in packs outrun and capture prey, that is when the idea of domesticating them came to be.

They would hunt with the wolves to eat, their loyalty proved to be essential. As time went on, man found different uses for canines for different reasons, they also bred them for how they looked and they became a status symbol. We eventually found uses for them besides hunting, their loyalty, their company, aiding mankind in many different ways.

They made life much easier to deal with in many ways.
