Greetings.
I won't quote from any religious book but from my own thoughts.
If heaven and hell are inside us then there is no real motivation for one to strive for heaven by doing good deeds and keep away from sinning.
A tyran for example, like Saddam, would feel great, would feel "heaven" from afflicting terror to his own people. Thus heaven inside us is totally wrong for the above reason and also it will die when our body also dies and will be erased or even become hell if we suffer from a mental disorder.
If someone has committed good deeds and deny from sinning but later suffered a mental disorder, then he will be in a state of hell. So where is his reward? I would rather choose the word "Peace of mind" rather than heaven and "disease" than hell.
If God has created the world and galaxy, then why can't we believe that he has also created heaven - which his followers will inherit?

The question is a bit difficult to answer the way you've written it. Yes, heaven is a REAL place. The bible says there was a war in heaven and Satan was cast out (Revelation chapter 12). It is However, not physical.. it is a spiritual realm.
I hope that helps you.

From a christian point of view... Heaven is the abode of God. The kingdom of heaven is hidden from the physical realm of things.
When Jesus comes again, heaven will be here on earth. Not up in the sky. The two will become one. All things will be complete and eternal.
For now, the kingdom of heaven in our hearts in the form of hope for things to come. We show the kingdom by our actions.

The "third heaven" is the Middle star of the sword of "Orion". (Check out some recent pictures, they are awesome). The word for "Heaven' (in Hebrew of course) is used for three things. The atmosphere, the starry sky, and the abode of the Almighty. If you accept the Spirit of the Creator (His name is YHVH) into you then in a sense you do have "heaven" inside of you.

Well, God is outside of space and time - so probably there, somewhere. At Jesus' second coming, after all the world is free of sin, and Satan is thrown in to the abyss forever, Heaven will be here on earth.

I believe it is a physical place. Jesus said he was going there to prepare a place for us. Bible says no ear has heard nor eye seen the wonders that await us there.
We know there's a river of life, beautiful gardens, a crystal clear lake, a thrown room of God. And walls made of precious gems, also gates made out a huge pearl.

Heaven is a state of the soul that is eternally in the presence of God. We experience a little of this at times in this life (along with experiencing Hell), but after we leave this life, our immortal soul will forever be in the presence of God (Heaven) or be separated from God (Hell).
Pope John Paul II gave a very good series of talks regarding Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory and they can be read at http://www.ewtn.com/library/PAPALDOC/JP2HEAVN.HTM

Ah yes, life is not justified without the idea of a god or a heaven. WHAT MEANING IS THERE?! The sooner we all accept the fact that there is no heaven and no hell, the better off the world will be.
