I have been in the catering and wine trade for a long time and have seen many unscrupulous drivers take the wheel after more than the legal limit. I have known people convicted of drink-driving offences and known people injured or killed by drivers over the limit. Since those who drink and drive do not expect to get caught or have an accident (and thus are not scared of any possible ensuing penalties or damage to people or property), how might you suggest we keep this scourge off the roads to protect the innocent lives driving while intoxicated can damage?

Giving alternatives.

A good public transportation system that will enable people to go home without too much of a hassle until late at night; taxis phone numbers posted in all bars and pubs.

No liquor licence to places without access to public transportation, unless they offer free or cheep transportation themselves.. Nightclubs sometimes select locations out of urban agglomerates because it is cheaper...how is one supposed to get home, with an hour cab ride??? People will use the alternative, if it is reasonable and easy to find.

Increased checkings during night from 10 PM onwards and until 3 AM for drunken driving. Some countries have columns for entry in license whereas many do not have the provision. This must be implemented all over the world Cancelling the license and shall not be issued again to the entire life time. Thus it becomes quite deterrent as people will not like to loose their license for a lifetime.

Maybe law enforcements and communities should explore ways to "reward" whistle blowers and responsible business owners. I used to be a waitress and I remember management threatening our bar tenders if we ever stopped serving a drunk or "called in" an intoxicated patron leaving the establishment...I did it anyway. I would take my break and go call from the payphone in the vestibule. Some businesses/ communities offer free rides home for people who are coherent enough to ask for it. Maybe it should be a law...Unfortunately I feel the solution must come from those of us who are responsible enough to VOW that we will NOT drive after drinking…PIEROD, because those who do have not come to terms with the possible consequences of their irresponsible actions.

Honestly dont think there is a way to deter them. Drink drivers are selfish, dangerous and arrogant! They must know the dangers, after all the campaigns that have tried to stop drink driving, yet they continue to do it. Probably think that nothing will happen to them, when the more likely outcome is that they kill themselves or an innocent party.

good question.
I can tell you about a project that is going on in our area at the moment.
if there are a group of people out on the town and one is a designated driver then if he or she shows his or her keys and driving license they get as many free soft drinks as they like in each pub visited.
not sure if any where else is doing this but its a free night out for the driver and every one elsa is safe from the idiots who think they can drive after drink.

Have the host of the affair take keys as people enter the door. If the host sees that the people have been sipping one too many, don't give the keys back. If guests refuse to give up keys upon entering, host politely lets them know that no beverages will be served to them. Let them know the rules in the invitation.

Maybe if people took their heads out of the ground and took an interest in each other, they would phone the police and report these people, I can't abide drunks at the best of times, but they disgust me when they drive whilst drunk, they are basically putting two fingers up at us all whilst showing they are selfish, irresponsible arseholes!

I think you should only get one chance and then you go to prison for life for drunk driving. Come on people, you can drink, just don't drive. The person you kill gets a life sentence why shouldn't you??!!

A fatal accident while under the influence will soon put a stop to this anti-social behaviour.

A breathalyser (with short tube - no passing to passengers!) or in car sensor linked to the ignition system.
