Left for the fork & right for the spoon!

Right for the spoon.

When cutting something, the fork is in the left hand and the knife in the right. In America, we usually then put down the knife after we have finished cutting, put the fork in the right hand and then starting eating. This is because during the revolutionary war, knives were sharper. British soldiers lived in the homes of the colonists. The soldiers were afraid of being stabbed and this rule became established.

In Europe the fork stays in the left hand and the knife stays in the right after you finish cutting the meat. You use your left hand to bring the food to your mouth with the fork and the right hand with the knife helps you arrange your plate. You also can use the knife to help shovel food on to your fork.

I am American, but I was an exchange student in France. I have adopted the European way of eating because it just makes more sense. It took a bit for me to unlearn the habits of switching hands, but once I did I resolved never to go back. No more switching hands, no more using just one hand while eating - it's great.

Contrary to one of the answers above, the "American" practice of switching the fork from one hand to the other has nothing to do with soldiers or wars. The "American" style was, in fact, the usual practice in Europe a few centuries ago, and still is in some places.
