If anyone claims they are the son of God today, they get laughed at. Back then, they were common and people were more superstitious and believed that stuff more.

To answer a question with a question: Does it matter?
I agree with you that anyone who claims to be the son of God in public today (and who believes it) would be judged as insane. However, that statement has very little to do with Jesus.
To answer a question with an answer: First, we must answer the question of whether or not Jesus exists/ed. I'm pretty sure he did (I'm going to stop the whole does/did bit now to avoid adding additional uncertainty). There is too much evidence in written scripture (not just the bible) to indicate that he existed for all of it to have been manufactured and too much physical correlation to back up such scriptures to suggest that all of them have been manufactured. However, that doesn't mean he did exist. So let's make that a 99.9%.
Second, if Jesus did exists, do we have any evidence to suggest that he was a loon. I don't see any. From the evidence (or if you prefer, stories) that we know it does seem that he did some pretty wacky things. Made some outrageous statements too, but could back them up. But honestly we know way to little about his life to say. So, assuming he existed I would say chances that he would have fit the modern day definition of insane are pretty random. So what % of the population is insane? Make it a 1%.
Third, the word just. Now from what we know of Jesus he was certainly not JUST anything (assuming he existed).
Therefore chances that the statement "Jesus was just a loon" is true: about 1% if your ignore the just and 0% if you consider the just.
Therefore, based on the evidence before me, I find Jesus a Non-Loon.

Before this is over, you may have a LOT of annoyed and/or angry responses. But then, your question is posed that way on purpose, isn't it?
Whether Jesus is "GOD", the "SON", the "HOLY GHOST", or, as you say, a "loon", if you pay any attention to the reports of his teachings, you have to leave room for recognition of the good of what he taught.
If everyone lived by Jesus' ideals, this would be a much better world. Most people live to satisfy their own needs, and only follow the teachings of Jesus when they think it will benefit them, especially in the afterlife, whatever form they think it will take.
Anything they can't accept on their own terms is twisted into something else so they can be self righteous.
If you believe Jesus is a "loon", we don't care. No one can know for sure what he was, one can only accept or not, then live their life according to whatever beliefs they accept.

oh god, here I go into the bible rant...
Ok first thing's first. It's pretty unlikely that jesus ever claimed he was the son of god. I'm pretty sure that even way back then he'd have gotten the same response that your talking about.
The only reference we have to anything he did or said is the bible, which were written LONG after he died and were originally little more than a collection of stories which had been passed orally for a very long time.
Now, the accuracy of hearsay aside, the writings were then put down by many different christian factions and some varied wildly from what you and I read today. after years of fighting over which writings were correct it was eventually decided that the leaders of all the groups would get together and decide on the "truth". They selected writings which showed that a central organisation was necessary, writings which would enable them to guide the general population in the direction they wished to go and then they burned the rest, dismissing it as heresy, After this, even this convoluted and contrived "truth" was cynically altered even further by the church over the years to allow them to exert control in the manner in which they wished, along with a whole bunch of mistranslations and misinterpretations on behalf of the scholars responsible for such things.
All that said, how can you be sure jesus ever even claimed to be the son of god? let alone decide if he was a loon or not? (man that was a long explanation just to say "who knows?" can you tell I'm bored?)

He claimed to be God.
3 possibilities:-
1) (As you suggest) he was a loon. He thought he was God but was not. His lifestyle, words, behaviour, etc do not give any such indication.
2) He was a liar. He knew he was not God but pretended he was.
When you think where it led him, that makes no sense at all.
3) It was (and therefore is) true.
Don't say He was a good man, a great teacher or any such nonsense. He does not offer that option.
If He is not God He is not good: he is mad, bad or worse.
YOU have to make your own choice.

If that is what you think you had better be right! Jesus was either crazy or he was who he said he was. If Jesus was just a "loon" he was a loon than knew the future and people. Every prophesy Jesus made was 100% accurate. That's a little too good for an average Joe.

Wow - won't you be shocked one day! Jesus is a loon? How can you remotely think that. Of course - maybe you don't live the way He taught, treating others with respect, etc. So I guess if I wanted to justify not living right - I can understand how one might want to say Jesus isn't real.

there are three optiions. jesus was a liar, a loon, or he was telling the truth.
if he was lying would he die for something he knew was a lie
if he was a loon, physoclogists who have looked into this thoery basing thier evidence on both people who believed he was the son of god and those who didnt, could find nothing in his charecter to suggest he was loon.
this leaves one option... he was telling the truth.

Jesus and the Bible have been proved over and over again to be Fact. You obviously need to investigate things before you ask questions, in which I shouldn't really take you seriously. However, since you are obviously crying out for an answer, you will find them here: www.answersingenesis.org. Oh, and in order to make it more real for you, watch the Mel Gibson movie, Passions of Christ
