Lets face it people the Middle East is broken up into Tribes, each tribe would like to see the other DEAD. They have been fighting each other for many hundreds of years. They proberly don't even remember why these days.
Saddam was a hero in his tribe and killed many of the other tribes. Saddam for all his killings kept the tribes from major wars; they were scared of this madman! Yet he kept control.
Is that what is needed again? Do you really think freedom will ever rule in the Middle East? How long before another Ruler like Saddam comes along.
The Leaders in Iraq now will slowly be killed off because they worked with the American's.
Democracy might work for a time over there, just look at history, they used to have Democracy and canned it.

You're dead on about the tribal feuds, battles and hatreds. That was one of the first I learned during my time in the middle east; 18 months of that time in Iraq. I don't think most people understand that Arabs (OK, not all Arabs) are loyal to their family, then their tribe (clan, sect, etc) and then their country/government. Oh, I disagree with you comment that they have been fighting each other for hundreds of years. They have been fight for over 1000 perhaps 2000 years.

An established democracy in Iraq in the middle of the middle east is the last thing the other Arab countries want; regardless of what their leaders might say in public. Think what would happen if the people in Syria, UAE, Yemen and especially Saudi Arabia would do if they saw the freedoms the Iraqi's would enjoy if Iraq established a successful democracy. They would start to ask why they can't have a democracy. Last thing the Arab leader and monarchs want!

As for another Saddam.....the Iranian president isn't too far off the mark.

Your explanation is not accurate.Saddam was not killer as you say ,He was hero who built strong, independent and stable country although many wares had been imposed on him. There were no tribes or tribes role in the issue and story of Saddam but there was party which govern Iraq for 35 years headed by Saddam.
Now , to answer your question I would like to say that Arab people and especially the Iraqis are able to overcome the American occupation and will produce hundreds of Saddam or better who will build new, strong and modern Iraq and has enough dignity to say NO to any aggression or occupation whether it is American or not.And this will not take long time .May be within 5-10 years only.

It seems that you have pretty much answered your own question.
The arab worlds have been controlled by the rich and powerful families or tribes for thousands of years. If you are on top with money and power, you have little interest in democracy.
Bring religeon into the mix to keep the under educated in line by pounding the doctrine of the day into them, starting as children, then you have the perfect arab community.
Yes, after their civil wars which I believe is inevitable, a new Sadam will emerge.
