I don't think its either. The church has had thousands of years to try and prove the existence of "god" and they haven't given any evidence to prove the existence of this mythical character.
Also, even if they had, I wouldn't think it was a comforting fantasy. Having read the "bible" and met many followers of faith, I find the "god" promoted in this fairy tale book hate-filled, evil and prejudiced. I don't want to be part of something so hateful.

My personal opinion is that "god" and religion were invented by man thousands of years ago to control the masses. Some people think that a "god" is comforting especially when they are dying. If that work for them, then fine, as long as the rest of us aren't brainwashed into thinking it!

The fact is, we're all bozos on this bus. The existence of God can neither be proven nor disproven at this time. That's why the concept of "faith" exists. That's also why I'm an agnostic Christian.

Personally I believe that the current, traditional concept of God is a human creation. This theistic concept was created when the first humans gained self-consciousness and were frightened and unable to explain natural phenomena. In this sense it is a comforting fantasy. Since that time, however, science has killed off that concept of deity and we are forced to confront a new reality because that concept of God is outdated and simply doesn't work in todays world.

Comforting. Who's to say any version of a personal "god" or "goddess" is fact or fantasy? That's what makes it so comforting. It's your personal ideal of what a higher being is. It's called hope.

A personal God means that you have faith in something - in which you would believe this person had control in making you and the course of your eternity. It is a question you ask yourself, whoever you believe in.
