Tobacco company records in the 1950s and 1960s show that they successfully bred tobacco plants that had higher concentrations of nicotine, and sold the seeds of these plants to farmers. Nicotine levels rose during the 1970s and 1980.

Now, it has been found that between 1998 and 2005 there has been an 11% increase in nicotine levels smokers’ inhale from cigarettes, making it harder for smokers to quit smoking.

Why do we let tobacco companies get away with this?

I've done a lot of reading on the subject, as I know people who are hooked, who want to stop, but find they cannot.

According to some studies, it is easier to give up Heroin, than it is to give up nicotine and smoking. Why should it be made even harder for people to give up if they want to?

I am a smoker, and have been desperately trying to stop. I can't go cold turkey because I end up taking it out on everyone else, and typically while I can accept that adults probably wouldn't mind me doing this, I really don't know how to justify taking my withdrawal out on my 6 year old daughter. Therefore, I tried nicotine patches. I was dreadfully sick, so the doctors told me to stop using them. The same thing happened when I have used nicotine gum, and also the inhaler.

In response to this statement (quote from another answerer) "tobacco companies get away with it because people continue to buy their products" - erm, I have to buy their products - how else do I get my fix? I AM ADDICTED TO THIS DRUG.

What I don't understand is if they can increase the amount to nicotine in a cigarette, why haven't they come out with cigarettes in stages that would help you quit, each stage having less nicotine in it, just like the patches?

So anyone got a petition for me to sign about this? I will gladly sign!

It has long been known that cigarettes are nothing more than a delivery vehicle for nicotine; this was one of the big results of the tobacco hearings of decades ago and was a shocking revelation when it first came out. Thus, cigarettes are a means of satisfying a drug addiction which they created in the first place.

The tobacco companies get away with it because (1) People continue to buy their product no mater what and (2) the tobacco companies give large campaign contributions to candidates for political office.

Obviously if you don't have a medical reason.. which I doubt your friend does.. then smoking anything is bad.. weed, cigarettes, cardboard.. Smoke is going into the lungs where it doesn't belong.. the only thing that belongs in your lungs is oxygen and then carbon dioxide as it's being exhaled. Weed might be better than tobacco due to the lack of physical addiction but constant abuse of weed will mess with your head.. it's just not worth it.. it makes you angry so easily after a while and it makes your paranoid as hell.. Wanting solid scientific studies is just an excuse to keep getting high.. all the people who've suffered through it and say quitting was the best decision they ever made should be proof enough. I quit too.. and I also tried cigarettes before for about 2 months.. they gave me horrible stomach pains but quit that too.. cigarettes didn't mess with my head as much as weed did though.

Smokers are such whimps. OK, it may be harder to stop smoking that to quit heroin, but people do that. OK, it may be your genes that make it more difficult for some to quit than others, but people still do that.

I can't stop smoking. Moan moan moan.

If you worry about your children, stop. Get ahold of yourself.

Tobacco companies are out to make money. And they will do anything they can to keep their customers tied to their products. Just like Crack Cocaine dealers, Drug pushers, Gambling establishments and Governments.

So, yes. Besides the world has too many people in it anyway.
