My 4 year old changed his sleeping habits right after Christmas. He had a bedtime at 9 every night, then all of the sudden he was staying up until 2 or 3 a.m.! I think it was all the excitement the holidays brought with them. Only 3 days ago he started a routine again. Now he's in bed by 10 and sleeping within the hour. I pop a movie in for him and he's out. I don't know if you are doing any of this, but try not giving him any sugar, no cookies, etc. Also don't let him take a nap. It's so funny you asked a question like this! It seems that everybody around me is having this problem. My best friends daughter isn't going to bed until 3 a.m.! We're working on her now! Let me know how everything works out! Good luck!

Hello I had the same thing happened to my son about the same age. has there been a change in his routine such as starting nursery or perhaps he has a nap time during the day which maybe time to try stopping as he might not need it anymore. naps usually stop around the age of 3-4 ready for school. I found this helped as my son was very tired by 6/7 pm after stopping them. If thats not the case a warm drink helps and a bath before bed. Keep on with the books thats a good start! Has he got night light?they can help too! Hope some of this will help good luck!

Children go through this several times as they grow up. Growth spurts and teeth coming in tend to happen at the same time as the changes in sleep patterns. Does your son get enough exercise during the day? This does help them to fall aslep better at night. Also dont eat supper or give him sugary snacks to late in the evening the sugar will hit them about bedtime. They also get over tired and then get hyper they will run till they drop if this is the case, is he still taking a nap in the afternoon? I had to have my two up from their nap before 3 pm or they would not be tired at bed time. The biggest thing is hold your ground, keep to a schedule and dont give him alot of attention after you have done your wind down routine. Kids are very quick to learn negative ways to keep our attention.

Try putting a bed side lamp on or leave the door slightly open, you need to be firm with this my friends little boy who is now 7yrs old tells her what time he is going to bed and she finds this incrediably stressful so the earlier you can rule your child's bedtime the better for you. Possible put a short film on before bed time to wind him down. Cut out anything with sugar as this will also make him hyperactive. Good Luck and Take Care.

Keep him active during the day, making him tired at bedtime.

he's after the total attention he gets when he is playing up by not going to bed. he is playing with you. but he will grow out of it... eventually. i remember doing the same thing to my parents. i also used to play up at bath time cos i would get their complete attention.

At that age, everything is new and exciting, and he's afraid he's going to miss something. He'll grow out of it.
