Using a notary depends on what state you live in, to privately sell your car, (which is a very good idea, because then you will get the most $$$$ for the car) have you set a price for the car, you can check the car's value at Kelly blue book.com. Set the price and place an ad in your local newspaper. Put in your ad all the best features the car has, and if lower miles state that also. Then wait for buyers to call, have then come over and check the car out, take a test drive with you in the car, and once you get an offer, and accept the offer, you exchange $$$$, the there is a place on the back of the title for you to sign and your buyer to sign. You are done. Your car is sold. Make sure to list the car's buying price a little higher, most people will offer you less for the car. Yes, keep the plates and also make sure the car is cleaned out of all your stuff. We have sold many car privately and have made $$$$. Best Wishes and Happy Car Selling.

You always keep the license plate. Beyond that you should check a state website or something. I doubt you will need a notary for any part of it.

for a private sale, you need to have the title to the vehicle
when the sale is complete, you need to keep your license plate, and depending on the state you live in, you may need to turn it in
cancel any insurance and registration that you have on the vehicle
once you receive the payment for the vehicle, you sign the vehicle over (on the title) and you're done
no need to go to a notary
