I went ot the supermarket today to get my weekly shop for the family. I needed to take the car so i decided to try and do some thing to offset the emissions from my car at the same time.

Instead of putting my washing in the Tumble Dryer before I went out I hung it on the line to dry.
I collected all my Carrier Bags and Cool Bags to use for the shopping instead of using new ones.
Instead of driving the Kids to schoold and going straight to the Supermarket, I walked the kids to school then walked home and got the car.
I took all our empty bottles, old papers and some clothes that the children have grown out of with me and used the recycling centre in the supermarket car park.

What else could I have done?

Do you think I offset my car emissions? (1.6 ltr unleaded fuel, journey of 5 miles approx 15 - 20 minutes driving time. )

Would you or do you do the same?

The easiest way to offset emissions is to stop using plastic products. Wood is a renewable resource-use paper instead of plastic.

Do not repaint your home, do not use soaps when you wash your car. Do not replace your worn out furniture with any that uses dyes. Do not replace your carpet. Do not flush water everytime you go to the toilet, unless there is Number two. Use cheap toilet paper that does not have dyes or other inky patterns.

If you have to wash your clothes or use other high energy consumption items, do so in the early AM, when there is less demand for electricity.

Sit in the dark at night and read a book to candlelight, get rid of the television, turn off the computer, quit using the printer (the inks are highly volatile and lazerjet uses more energy).

Learn to like colder rooms in the winter and hotter temps in the summer. All of this will reduce your emissions and make you a good environmental citizen.

And do not be discouraged by knowing that when some Hollywood type charters a jet from LA to NYC, they would emit more on that trip than you would save in a year.

What is the lesson here? Do not be hypocritical in your savings. By dedicating yourself to your minimalist lifestyle, you and your family will do your part to Saving the Planet.

edit:

Don't eat corn or corn products because it will raise the price of corn and the people in Mexico will not be able to afford it to make their dinners (corn is being bought up to make ethanol).

Get rid of Tony Blair and Gordon 'mugger' Brown and the rest of the Labour cronies!

That should reduce emissions by about 99.9%

Simply by stopping them flying all over the world and using their chauffeur driven limos! They bang on about it so much - let them use public transport and pay for it out of their own pockets

Give up your car, shut off the heat to your house, don't burn ANYTHING, and eat only food that you grow yourself.... Grow plenty of popcorn so you can lay back and watch the world economies collapse...
