is it better to not snack completely (thus taking in zero calories) or to snack on a chocolate bar (that contains 320 calories) and proceed to the gym immediately to run off the 320 calories?

If chocolate bar is your only choice, it's better to not snack at all. But if you are eating healthy snacks (fruit, nuts, etc.) then I believe that 5 small meals / snacks are recommended as better for you than 3 larger meals.
