rental companies require an international lincese?

Rental agencies will rent to you under the following conditions:

1) VALID international license
2) MAJOR CREDIT CARD (VISA/MC/AMEX)
3) LOCAL physical address (motel/hotel/friends, family)
4) LOCAL phone number (see above)
5) YOU MUST PURCHASE THE INSURANCE

The deposit on your credit card may be higher than the usual $250-$300, so be prepared. When I worked for Enterprise, our international customers were charged a $1000 deposit.

If you are a visitor and it's a valid license, it should not be a problem with most rental car companies...maybe the locals, but as a rule, not the nationals like Hertz, Avis, etc. They will probably be more concerned with you having a major credit card.

I drove once in Australia without international license.
Just give them a bigger tips when signing up.
